Hoookay, so I got this e-mail from ISU about downloaded music yada yada yada....I deleted the 2 songs. The thing is--I have over 250 Limewire tracks, yet they only singled out these two songs. Songs that were download in January 2007, and I haven't listened to them since probably last summer.

I know, I know, Limewire is wrong. I actually just deleted my Limewire because friends have been getting these e-mails too and I don't want to deal with the hassles that come with it anymore. I'm just wondering about a few things....

1.) Why just these songs? Why not all 250+ of them? They were different artists and genres, if that matters.
2.) I want to purchase the songs I've downloaded through iTunes in the near future when I can afford it--will probably have to spread it out over a few months. But until then, how can I keep these songs without getting more e-mails? I've heard that they only e-mail/track people who are "sharing" their files---I don't even know how to turn this function on or off! Is there a way? And I won't be buying all 250+, I'm going to delete the ones I never listen too to save a little $$$.

Anyone....?

When you use limewire I believe it automatically puts the files into a shared folder. You then need to move them out of this file from them not to be shared when you are logged onto Limewire. If you've deleted limewire that should take care of the sharing of files.

I don't think it will matter if you buy the songs you have downloaded at this point. You have done the "illegal" activity and it can't be undone by buying them. I may be wrong on that.

The e-mail stated I should delete all download songs to prevent more e-mails or an investigation of some sort. I plan to buy and then delete, I just want to keep the playlist for now so I know which ones to get and some of them I still listen to most of the time.

FYI - the main people who are being busted for sharing music are the idiots have have thousands of songs shared in the Shared Folders directory. If you don't want to get into trouble then always do the following:

1. Remove music from your "Shared Folders" directory or whatever directory you have Limewire mapped to.
2. Always remember to disconnect when you are not actively downloading.

You'll still be at risk as long as the files are on your computer. If they investigate they will know what songs you downloaded illegally. I don't know how purchasing the song after it is downloaded illegally is handled.

You'll know if they've got you because you will receive a bill. That is when you know you are in real trouble, especially because the bill can be huge.

If you have a CD burner put them on a CD and delete the files from your computer.

Bingo.

I think Limewire also has an option about never sharing files. Of course it says it is not reccomended, but yes I'm one of those who takes and doesn't give.

You may want to back everything up and format several times. Maybe even invest or download (legally!!) software that will write garbage onto your harddrive to make sure any trace of that music is gone. That is the only way that you can be sure the downloaded music is truely gone.

anyone know where i can find CD's that will hold more than the 80minute CD's walmart has? I've got 21 hours, 30 minutes of LW songs, but I won't be backing all of them up. Probably will back up like 16-17 hours of stuff that I want to keep.

these CD's probably aren't cheap either, i'm guessing...

and i can't tell if you're recommending a back-up of ALL iTunes (even the legit purchases and cd uploads), but if you are, there's nearly 5 days worth of stuff plus about 5 hours of video

burn the cd as data cd rather than a music cd and you will fit a lot more on them (100+ songs).

otherwise spend a little money and buy a DVD burner and blank DVDs. $50 bucks on Newegg.com will get you a burner and 50 blanks easy. DVD will hold about 6 times more.

Would this still play on a CD player not in a computer?

it depends on the cd player. if the cd player says it will play mp3 cd's it will work. some do and some don't. it is getting so that most vehicle cd players will play them.

I was going off the assumption he just wanted to backup his computer files.

you guys may all think that by clicking never share and things of the sort you are in the clear, but i did every "do not share" option available and mine was still sharing. so after i download every song, i have to unshare them. and then after i do that, i delete them because itunes automatically makes a copy of them for me.

in addition, your computer will still share even if you "uninstall" limewire. that doesnt always get all of the pieces off of the computer. after i had uninstalled it, i got a letter about sharing music. apparently there was still pieces of it on my computer, so i deleted it and have been fine since.

Better solution:

Go to Best Buy, Staples, Office Max, Target, Wally-world, whatever, and buy a 2GB flash drive for $25. More space than a CD, more durable than a CD, and easier to use than a CD. I've literally killed CDs with multiple burns. I've yet to kill a flash drive.

Better yet, download music legally and you'll be left alone by the RIAA, university officals, and lawyers.

It would if your CD player also played MP3's

Well said. I buy CDs for the most part myself...
