Fertilizing my lawn for initial spring application

Will bump the mower up a notch this time out. Problem is my mower has developed a surge once it gets warm. Local dealer is 2.5 weeks out for service. Newer mower has the plastic carberator on it. I’ve had it off twice. Cleaned it and blew everything else. Spark plug is good. New fuel and cleaned air filter. Just wondering if it developed an air leak that is causing it. Frustrating!
Is it a Briggs & Stratton motor? Those are notorious for surging issues on the new Toro's and from what I've read there isn't really a solid solution.

I'm too busy to care anymore and the city keeps increasing water prices so I haven't bothered watering the lawn for years. If it browns out then whatever, I'll gladly take back the time it takes to mow the yard. I mowed a week ago and yard badly needs mowed right now but trying to find some time this week when the kids don't have something going on is challenging.
Same. We had a new build and I was always worried when it would turn the least bit brown and start watering the hell out of it. Watched all my neighbors yards turn browner than a hay field for an entire summer, and come back lush with the fall rains. Watering is overrated. And ******* expensive.

I could spend $60 on a new carb or spray some carb cleaner around the carb when it starts to surge to see if there is a leak as dealer tech told you would hear the change in sound if there was a leak.

New neighbor, 2-3 months ago. Not much lawn maintenance while the house sale was in process, and new guy doesn't seem all that bothered by crabgrass. So now it's infiltrating from his lawn into mine.

OH NO!!! Some of the weed killer spray got several feet into his yard!!! What a shame! :D:cool:

What spray do you use? I didn't have any all year but the past couple weeks it's exploded, I blame the prairie area behind our house.

Why? If it's actually prairie it should be dominated by perennials, not barnyard annuals like crabgrass.

Fair, the crabgrass might not have come from there (though none of my neighbors have it so not sure where it came from), but our prairies are inadequately managed at best. I don't think the spot behind our lot is managed whatsoever, constantly full of weeds.

Our new yard was sodded in '07, and I've never had a crabgrass problem. That is except for every August at least a little tries to get started along the curbing. It's not coming from the street. I think crabgrass seed lives in the soil indefinitely. One plant can produce in excess of 100,00 seeds.

Yard is doing pretty good this year… a little yellow nutsedge has popped up recently but I think I can manage.

Crazy —- haven’t run the irrigation once all year.

Hope everyone had success this summer.

Glad it's drying out a bit, now I can start cutting it a bit lower. Had my mower all the way up + 1/2 inch since May.

My yard as been as plush as has ever been at this time of the year IMO. I actually am missing my brown out that I have by now where I didn't have to mow for like a month. I paid a local lawn service to do treatments again for the first time in several years as really had issues with thistles that I could not manage anymore and they seemed to have knocked down those and the weeds pretty well. I've been mowing at 3"+ setting since I don't have time to mow it more than about every 7-10 days usually especially when it feels like it rains on days I actually have free to mow so if I mow any shorter right now would be really tough to run in mulch mode.

Looking to aerate and overseed. Yard is originally all Kentucky Bluegrass, considering going with a fescue to get more hardy over the entire season.

Any recommendations on type of seed to use this fall? Yard is full sun.

The service we use in Ames is supposed to start aeration and over seeding this week, got an email on Monday.

Anyone have luck with overseeding without irrigation? My yard is too large and awkwardly laid out to make watering practical, and of course now the rain has shut off after being wet all summer.

Hit the right rains you will grow some grass. I do it every year and some are a miss.

I've always gotten the Lesco tall turf fescue from SiteOne
