My lawn really grew nicely last year.
Nice!
I just planted about 1/4 acre with a wildflower and bee seed mix from Site One
Hoping I got the soil worked up enough and can keep it wet enough to germinate

How many years did it take for you to get that result?
The more I’ve read the more it seems like this could take like 2-3 years.

Any tips? Do you mow or burn it in the fall?

Anyone use Sledgehammer+? What’s the best time to use it and should I wait some time after using prevent or weed and feed?

If I had a huge yard this is what I would do to minimize how much I have to mow. I know someone that seed the front part of a deep lot they built on with a wild flower/prairie mix and they burn it off every couple years.

I have a few flower beds I seeded with blanket flower which I call "Cyclone Flowers" as they are red and yellow. They are very hardy perirenal that it looks like you have some of that in your stand too. I have a "V" in my fence that I can't mow into the corner so I just tilled it up and made it a wild flower garden and just mow it down in the fall and dump flower pots and anything compostable into it then clear the debris the spring and let the new growth come up. Some of the species start to take over a bit but I try to overseed with with something else and hope that blends in.

Best product for creeping Charlie? It has crept over from the neighbors over the past several years and is officially a major problem for us now. DIY or hire out weed control?
Trying to just kill it off? Good luck, their may be something to spray I dont know about. Killing it like a dandylion without harming grass, to me is impossible or maybe expensive.

I have had people say creeping charlie and it is something else. Creeping Charlie itself has a few other names.

Fight it. I have been for 30 years. I won.
It seems to grow best in the best soil and in the sunlight. Keep hitting it with your recomended herbicide weekly from Oct 1st to November 1st. Walk your lawn and pull up the vines occasionally. If you mulch or your neighbor with an infestation mulches, this can lead to just spreading it around to propogate more plants. This is not scientific or proven, just 30 years of fighting and what seems to happen. I can pull what I find by hand and keep it under control for the last 3 or 4 years or maybe it is because of the drought in western Iowa and controlling it as best I can?

I ended up getting some grass seed today and plan to dethatch (hope this counteracts the crabgrass preventer I put down) and seed pretty heavy in the spots that are brown. Still not sure what caused it since my yard seems to be the only one effected. I did treat for grubs last year and overseeded last spring. It looked great all year last year but took a hard turn this spring. I was waiting to see if it came back around as it got a bit warmer but no such luck. Maybe the grub damage was done before treatment if it was grubs. It is also weird that the damage is almost specifically the front yard.
I did dethatch and put some seed down. Hopefully the dethatching will counteract the crabgrass preventer. On Friday I did do some checking of other peoples yards in my area (I live in Ankeny) and in general there were some yards that didn't look great. Mine had some big dead spots but some other lawns in town seemed to have some issues too. My neighbor's yard looks better than mine, but he is still not happy it doesn't look better (it is ok but looks rougher when up closer) since he pays quite a bit for a lawn service. It has some dead stuff speckled throughout the yard like my back yard does. I wonder if some of the issue could be winter kill. Even another neighbor that takes really good care of his lawn has some rough spots in his yard.

Big issue for me is where I had Christmas inflatables up over winter. I think I put them up too early (we were prepping for kiddo #2 so had them out in early November) and it just killed the grass under them, it was sped up I think because we didn't get a good freeze until later in winter.

Second issue is my god damned neighbor who uses A+ (and they put down stuff twice already, which of course isn't working) and the god damned dandelions creeping towards my yard.

Ok, i did the fertilizer thing over the last couple of weeks. Dandelions are out of control, but i assume they'll go away soon. What should I use now to prevent crab grass?

You're at least a couple weeks too late for prevention purposes. You could still put down a pre-emergent and get some benefit by stopping all of those dandelions that just went to seed, but the ship is likely sailed on the crabgrass as those seeds have almost certainly germinated already. You're going to look for something with quinclorac to control it post-emergence as you see it.

Drive XLR8 works pretty well for me.

I just happened to be driving by one. If it would have been priced on the shelf, I would have walked.
Ya. Their prices are insane.

Their quality on decor type stuff is really good. I have gotten a couple really nice wind chimes and some pots there.

My god Earl May prices are high. I just spent $30 for a weed preventer that would have cost $12 at Home Depot.

Yeah...which is too bad because they are top notch! Very helpful, wonderful customer service and quality products! Maybe that is what it costs to provide all of that...but it certainly limits who can use their services because they are very expensive!

Forecast doesn’t look great for rain. At what point do people pull out the sprinklers in the spring? I usually haven’t had to do that until later in the summer.

I’ve been running mine lightly for 3 weeks. I usually taper mine off in the summer but try and grow and germinate as much as I can in spring.

I'm too busy to care anymore and the city keeps increasing water prices so I haven't bothered watering the lawn for years. If it browns out then whatever, I'll gladly take back the time it takes to mow the yard. I mowed a week ago and yard badly needs mowed right now but trying to find some time this week when the kids don't have something going on is challenging.

Will bump the mower up a notch this time out. Problem is my mower has developed a surge once it gets warm. Local dealer is 2.5 weeks out for service. Newer mower has the plastic carberator on it. I’ve had it off twice. Cleaned it and blew everything else. Spark plug is good. New fuel and cleaned air filter. Just wondering if it developed an air leak that is causing it. Frustrating!
