Fertilizing my lawn for initial spring application

What's the key to timing the application of crabgrass preventer? My lawn care guy (who is very cheap but has varying degrees of quality service directly related to his level of sobriety) didn't put it down until mid-June last year and the weeds got really bad in sections of my lawn. I usually will supplement what my guy puts on with some additional fertilizer or other treatment if necessary so I will probably do crabgrass preventer on my own this year.
I am self taught. Wait til the forsythias bloom. If you do it too early it just doesn't last as long. Those yellow bushes all around in late April early May, I do crabgrass preventer on the south side in last half of April most years north side in Early to Mid May. You wont get it perfect every year its an art and that's what makes it fun for me. forsythia below.

It says on bag if it doesn’t rain within 30 days of application may get eradic results, I’m probably overthinking this.

My yard is in desperate need of grass seed in many spots due to past construction damage, yet also want to get the initial fertilizer on. In which order and time separation would you put them on? Should I wait until next week when it'll be consistently warmer?

If I put crabgrass preventer down today and ground temp goes above 50-55 degrees before it rains does that negate the preemerge? So ? Do I need to water to activate ?
You will still get some benefit, it just may be reduced a bit. Not all of the weed seed will germinate as soon as the ground hits 55. You're still better off getting pre-emergent down slightly late than not at all, just don't be surprised if you do happen to see a few escape.

Am I good to dethatch now?
I'd think you want to wait until you've mowed a time or two. Dethatching can be pretty tough on the grass and I wouldn't want to stress it that hard while its coming out of dormancy.

Makes sense. Do guys wait until they dethatch for crab grass preventer though? Seems like a long time to wait to apply that after a couple mowings.

I'd time them separately. After the pre-emergent is watered in it binds to the soil, so dethatching later shouldn't have any impact on it's efficacy.

I've never detatched my lawn. Just aerating in the fall. Maybe someone else has experience.

I would agree that wrecking your lawn in the first weeks of growth may do a lot of harm.. But I'm just a DIY/Youtube watcher, no biology/horticulture degree

Sweet. Thanks. Are you an agronomist?

I wonder if I can just put the crab grass preventer down now then. Or maybe that would lead me to just having to do it again in May since it might not last as long.

This is my problem as well. Any help?
