My lawn is small enough that I don't even put down pre-emergents anymore, just lawn food. I've manually pulled any undesirables for the last few years. A quick 15-20 minute walk around my yard every few days is enough keep things cleaned up. Double benefit of getting a little bit of extra exercise and not spreading unnecessary chemicals on my lawn.
You know what would stop all chemicals in your lawn?

Getting rid of it and planting clover

I'm going to be out of commission for a few months and I don't trust my wife near a spinning blade. Any recommendations on companies that mow in the DSM metro? Expected cost?

I reached out to our local facebook group/association to see if any kids mowed....I guess that's not a thing now or maybe I yelled at them too much when they were children.

If you went this route and she dressed liked this, I wouldn't trust her either!

A Plus does almost everything people hire out in my area. When they overseeded and aerated my yard last year, I believe they quoted me over the phone based sq footage using Google earth. I’ve only used them once for that purpose but no complaints. A couple of my neighbors have used them for fertilizer and weed control for years. My price was super reasonable at like 100 bucks.

Looks like rain today, with warmer temps following. Is this morning before the rain a good time for the pre-emergent?

I used a few different ones in the years our kids were born. They all did a poor job. Want too fast, rutted up the yard, etc. Most outfits insist on doin the fertilizer and the mowing, as mowing isn't real profitable on its own.

But that being said, the least poor one I found was DeVries. They still took about 4.5 minutes to do my 1/3 acre lot, but it looked okay, and they were more or less on time, showing up every week.

The worst I found was A+. I know they are (or were) a sponsor, but I literally had 18" tall grass in my yard. I kep having to call and hound them, while my wife was about to go into labor. I finally mowed it once we got back from the hospital, and the guys showed up while I was finishing up. This was about 3 or 4 weeks after their previous mow. I'd never been so angry in my life.

Don't worry, they kept trying to charge me after I fired them. I have a call log sheet of about 25 phone calls it took to get it all straightened out.

I had thought about cutting my grass short for the first mowing of the season to get rid of the brown on top, I have heard to let it grow before mowing to promote root growth. Does anyone have thoughts on this?

Let it grow fairly tall, before your first cut. It will help promote root growth and help it through the hot/dry summer.

Must be time to plant tomatoes. Neighbor has one planted already as he likes having them early. Too bad he did the same thing last year and the 3' tall one he planted got hit by frost. Pretty neat to watch frozen tomato leaves turn a different color once the sun hits them.
