My roommate and I used to shoot pool with Jacey Holloway at Tazzle's from time to time. He was really nice, down-to-earth guy.

I spent way too much time and Tazzles and also shot quite a bit of pool with Jacy. You and I probably know each other. :) Willoughby lived in the apartment building next to mine so I had a casual friendship with quite a few of the basketball team.

Jacy, Dedric and some of the other ballers went to my high school for an ISU promotional thing while I was in college. It was fun to chat with the guys before the game, the small town folk were wowed that I was friends with the guys on the team. Dedric shooting rainbow threes from 30 feet and draining them was not a surprise. Holloway throwing down alley oops WAS a surprise. Holy ****, I didn't know he could do that. Had seen him throw them up, didn't know it worked the other way, too.

Did someone say Woodbury?
KN4WIPB.gif

Repeating but I wonder how many times he had that happen in practice because all of his teammates' responses say 'JFC, again?'.

My first week at ISU, Will Blalock and another player I don't remember joined our game at Lied. As a huge ISU basketball fan and basketball player growing up, I was pretty tickled to see Blalock, let alone, play on the same team. He let everyone do their thing, but it was clear he could take over whenever he wanted to.

He grabbed a rebound and handed it off to me. I saw him take off on a sprint down the sideline, and I figured he was up to something. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him point to the rim when he crossed half court. He was circling in from the wing to the baseline. I threw him an alley oop from half court, he took off from deep, snatched it, and threw it down two-handed. He pointed at me on his way back up the court, and that was about as cool as I've ever felt on a basketball court.

Was at quite a few parties with Stinson back in the day, since we were both dating swimmers.

I'm related to Jared Homan (second cousin), but if I ever actually met him, it would have been at a family reunion when we would have been around 12, so no stories there.

My Dad's a big Hawkeye fan (so was I growing up, naturally). Just so happens that one of their basketball players from the late 80's/early 90's lives near my parents (I think this guy's wife worked with my dad) and is a friend of my cousin. When my grandma passed away, they came to the visitation and funeral. Nothing like a 6'-9" dude (and his 6'-4" wife) making a family of tall people (I'm the short one at 6'-2") feel short.

My nephew's dad is 6'11" and his paternal uncle is 6'10". He always says he got the short end of the stick (pun intended) since I'm a whisker taller than his 5'11".

6' 11" and 6' 10" is TALL. I'm 6' 3" and I'm taller than most, but it isn't uncommon to run into someone who is a bit taller than me. I met a guy at a party a few weeks ago who was 6' 11". It's hard to come to terms with just how tall that is. Looking straight up at someone is such a weird feeling. A lot of simple things must be such a hassle.

Like walking through doors, which typically top out at 6'-8".

Reminds me of when I saw Skoglund walking through Black Engineering. He instinctively ducked through the doors, even though they were extra tall.

About the third or fourth year into the CPR era, one of his assistants, who was my childhood neighbor, gave me assessment before the first game at Jack Trice. "It's going to be a long year." After asking why he expected that he said-- "We just don't have the talent to compete in the Big 12."
He was right, and I'm glad we have CMC and staff who are able to recruit the guys that can play in this league.

Getting into and out of most cars is quite an operation for him.

Back in 02 I was drinking with some friends and my wife at the TipTop and in walks Larry Eustachy after they had gotten beat that afternoon. Sits down at the bar next to me and asked how it was going. Wanted my story etc. Other guys were walking up and trying to talk hoops with him. Him and I talked about everything but. He bought my wife and I drinks all night and he was plastered. Funniest thing he said was “this is why I like the TipTop nobody gives a **** when you lose.”

That right there is an awesome story/interaction. Especially given what we know about Larry now haha

Sooooo...tall stories from someone who's 5'1" (used to be 5'3-1/2" but that's another story)...
1) Back in my college days at Washington State, I was in line at the treasurer's office waiting to pay my bill. Being a shy book-nerd back then, I had my nose in a book and ignored everyone around me, and shuffled forward whenever necessary. After my turn came, and I completed my transaction, I turned around to leave and ran face first into a guy's belly. It was our freshman center, Steve Puidakis, who was about a half inch shy of 7'. Embarrassed the hell out of BOTH of us.
2) somewhere around 15 years ago, I was hiding in the shade outside the east concourse at Jack Trice, chatting with a fairly tall young man who was also enjoying the shade while waiting for his friends to get there We were joking about our bad luck at having seats in the sun the whooooole game. I was joking about sitting behind him so that I could take advantage of his shadow. After a few minutes he said, "Oh, here come my teammates now". Stupid me, I asked if he was on the basketball team, and he said "Yes ma'am, I'm Damion Staple.". D'oh!

In my defense, ISU games were rarely on TV back then and from our seats in the rafters, they all look 2 inches tall and it's tough to see more than the numbers. However, the corn-rows should have tipped me off to who he was.

Having been part of the GrandDaddys softball days, we had close relationships with football, basketball and hockey players. One of the memorable moments was when we won Class “A” state. The Jim Luebers family and farming community took us in as family for meals etc. Jim had went to coach Criner to play in the state tournament. Of course Criner words were somewhat to the point of, do you want to be a professional FB player or SB player. Jim been just one of a “few” athletes and teammates from ISU with us that year. Jim was a vital part of us winning the tournament. After the tournament we had to insure the picture for the Waterloo paper did not icl Jim, however his local paper had a photo with Jim. Damn I miss those guys.
