New owners were enamored with Davis. They wanted him to win now and that’s why they didn’t shop around. And they didn’t want to pay Luka the super max, so now was the time to deal him.

It’s just crazy the NBA rules means a trade that Luka didn’t ask for resulted in him losing the ability to get a super max deal now. So he lost roughly $100m due to no fault of his own.

Well, of course, he gets to double dip. They charge the company for space to sell the merch and then he gets a cut from the business.

When he gets back to healthy, the Mavs will be a problem for the west.

He was pretty healthy last year (76 out of 82 games). Otherwise he has played in 56, 40, 36, 62, and 56 games. Thats missing 36 percent of possible games (taking into account shortened seasons due to Covid) That’s not great for a cornerstone piece. Not Zion or Kawhi levels, but that has to be one of the higher ones for someone of his caliber.

They aren't a serious contender even 100% healthy IMO. They have one good ball handler on the roster. Will probably be really good defensively, but that offense will struggle in the postseason. Especially with floor spacing if they play AD at the 4 a lot like he wants.

I actually think it was more Nico Harrison convincing the new owners AD was the guy they needed. Nico was at Nike and AD was his guy there. I really think it was a case of Nico being in love with AD and now they've GOT to win a championship with him, or Luka needs to completely break down, or he's going down in history with potentially all time awful trade decision.

He was a donkey, would insult the other sharks, and even pout if he he didnt get his way. I figured he would be difficult to deal with.

Best explanation I've seen is that the new owners are purposely trying to tank because the Texas legislature refuses to allow sports gambling, so now they are trying to lose all fan support so that they can threaten to move the team to Vegas as leverage. There's just no basketball reason to trade a top 3 player who hasn't even hit his prime.

I thought the basketball reason was they didn't want to have to potentially pay him a max contract next season.
