F*** The Refs!

Townsend should have stayed away. Can not try to go catch a ball you are not under in traffic

The LB contacting WR call down the field was also not great play. Can not blame refs for calling that. Really no need for it based on ball I do not think

Refs missed holding call I think on one of IA Qb scrambles for good gain.

But ISU got lucky they didnt declare ISU dumb backwards pass on 2nd and 1 near midfield backwards out of bounds. That was a horrible call on 2nd and 1

Refs did not help but ISU could have played better. Burkles awesome hands saved the day

why would Townsend even attempt to field the punt after being hit? odds are 500-1 of him catching a punt one handed. Then, after learning his lesson - don't field the ball if you can't catch it, he forgets that this rule doesn't apply to kickoffs. 2 total bonehead plays by the same person.
Well, the time between him being hit, and the ball arriving was like 1/10th of a second. How quick do you make decisions?

I couldn't see on TV how crowded overall it was but with the ISU blocker getting closer to where Townsend was I was wondering if a poison call would be better but even that may not have had time.

Wasn't boneheaded at all. As a punt returner fair catching a ball you should only concentrate on catching the ball. If you get interfered with it's your ball and a 15 yard penalty. The initial flags were correct. How the officials huddled and decided contact 10 yard before the interference with the Iowa player then backing into Townsend was being blocked into him I can't undertake. I guess on the review they decided they didn't have a 3d hologram so they couldn't determine if the ball hit Townsends forearm so they left it as called.

The thing with the review I have the biggest problem with is you are so focused on the arm issue and not looking at the larger play. The clearly right play looking at replay is that Townsend was interfered with. If you really want to argue it hit his arm fine but I really am 95% sure it didn’t. When you add those together you clearly should just make the call closest to right. Whether you think it hit his arm or not the really correct call is Iowa State ball and 15 yards. At least get the ball to the right team.

Can’t stand Iowa and their fan base. Got the calls and those hill billy band wagon fricks not knowing how to add 2+2 fans. Need I say more

How about the Iowa field goal? Announcers made it sound like that was questionable.
I thought it might have been no good from the TV angle, but I'm obviously biased.

Question: If the ball goes directly over the goal post (not inside or outside), is the kick supposed to be ruled good or bad?

I disagree, it was pretty obvious Townsend didn't touch it. Enough evidence that I'm 99% sure. Nothing on him moved and the ball's spin/trajectory didn't change, because it didn't hit him, unless it defied the laws of physics. If that's not enough evidence to I return a call, then I don't know how you ever overturn anything. A ref can always convince himself there is a 1% chance what he's seeing is wrong, and therefore the call on the field has to stand.

I rewatched the game last night after getting back from Ames. In the stadium, the replays looked very clear that it didn’t touch Townsend. But at home, you can kinda see Townsend’s glove move as the ball went by.

It was very close and think differing to the call on the field wasn’t egregious.

Now picking up the interference penalty was really bad.

Probably I overreacted. But the infamous punt bungle of 2019 was at the back of my mind. Same teams. Same place in the field.

Experience is being able to recognize your mistakes when you make them again.

It wasn't the same place. 2019 was in the SW corner of the field. Yesterday was in the NE.

6 years ago in very different scenarios and entirely different players that haven't had that much experience.

I thought the refs were pretty bad yesterday favoring Iowa but ISU got some calls
  1. Punt - I still don’t think it hit Townsend but could see why that call stood. Picking up the Kick catch interference was terrible - Favor Iowa leading to 3 points
  2. On Iowa’s long 3rd quarter drive giving Iowa a first down on his 3rd-down scramble at midfield was terrible. He was a yard short and they just upheld on replay - Favor Iowa leading to 3 points
  3. On Iowa TD drive, there definitely was a hold on our DB vs their TE on the 3rd down sack. The unsportsmanlike was a soft call though and negated any chance at a goal line stand - Favor Iowa but I’ll give them the benefit of a doubt that they would have scored a TD on that drive regardless
  4. Very blatant hold on Iowa’s last play of the game. Luckily they didn’t convert - Favor Iowa but didn’t hurt ISU
  5. On the long pass to Eskildsen in the first Eskildsen pushed off to get separation that was missed. - Favor ISU led to 3 points
  6. The incomplete pass that “may” have been a lateral. I think it was forward but it was close. That one went in our direction - Favor ISU
So I have 6 badly missed or questionable calls, favoring Iowa 4-2 and 6 points to our 3

Missed the non DPI/ holding call on our last drive, on the play previous to Burkle tipped pass. I believe the Football gods granted us karma there.

A field goal that goes right over the upright is no good, that was the worst call of the day and someone should be suspended or relegated for that. How many of the bad calls came from that one official that called that I wonder. And did that one official grow up a Hawkeye fan?

The unsportsmanlike on our d lineman was really soft, but so was the one they called on Wetjen on the opening kickoff so at least they were consistent on that.
