I have an annoying buddy who is a big Hawk fan. Probably the most grating thing he says to me when talking Iowa/Iowa State is "IS-WHO?"

In regards to other schools/rivals, I roll my eyes every time I hear "EMAW!" or even worse "ROCK CHALK, KU" Had some annoying Kansas fans sitting behind me back on Feb 1 who started doing this near the end of the game in Hilton
Just as eye roll worthy are all of the stupid hand gestures (Texas' horns up, Tech's guns up, Baylor's bear claw, TCU's little bunny foo foo). I want the fans clapping and making noise not miming that they are a bear or telling Little Bunny Foo Foo stories. So intimidating.

I like calling Nebraska “Gobi Gred” in forums because that’s what I phonetically heard living there for six years. Not Go big red… more goobiiii GReeeed.

Love Hawkroaches. It works phonetically too. Would be better for in person jabs than message board/twitter though.

This right here. The minimal effort to write ToE or Hok is the best reason to use these. And why give Iowa your full effort anyway, right?

While I like the term Hawkroaches (because it fits the fanbase) I often prefer HaLkroaches - especially after they lose (no W).

Why "hoks?" I've never understood it. "Haks" makes more sense to me because it's missing the W and is phonetically identical to "hacks." Kind of a spinoff of "IoLa"

TOE has also run its course.

"Hawkroaches" is fantastically accurate and creative, however.

For me, it's because when they're at their most obnoxious, they cut off the "go" in "go hawks" and just yell "Hawks" at each other. As it gets yelled more often, the more it sounds like a primal, guttural mating call that sounds more like "Hoks".

I'm sure that's not why other people use it, but that's my interpretation of it.

I was never a fan of EIU.

When we're trying (and succeeding) in increasing fan count in the whole state, I don't like the regional aspect of it. There are plenty of hard core fans in this half of the state (because we HAVE to be).

Interesting collateral damage from the Hoks losing last weekend. The two sports restaurant I go to not one person is wearing holiday apparel.

I like ToE. It is directly related to some Ferentz stupid. The rest is meh.

I think it's funny to call somebody a toe too, like an anatomical toe. It wouldn't be funny to call someone a tow or a tun or a tds. Toe is funny.

In early days of these fan forums it was "EIU" and toe is way better.

I say don't even capitalize any letters. Just lowercase toe. "Everybody see toe blow that game last night?"

If you ever are on the receiving end of a random, 'go hawk' from a complete stranger usually the W is silent hence 'go hok'.

And the true tavern hawks leave the "s' off the end.

Take it inbreds still works. When your father is also your uncle, it should always work with the Iowa fans.
