Eustachy to Oregon State?

Well, that would bring him back to Hilton next season

That would be strange for an opposing coach to get a nice round of applause actually. I think there is still a large ammount of fans that like Larry including myself who wish we could have handled that situation better than it was.

It would be a conference upgrade for him, but as the blog notes, he hasn't exactly torn it up at So. Miss.

He didn't exactly tear it up at ISU either. Two spectacular seasons of winning (created mostly by ONE player) sandwiched between years of mediocrity before and after is not the mark of a great coach or a great program. People who think Larry is a great coach because of what happened in 2000-2001 remind me of those who still think Kirk Ferentz is a great coach because of what happened in 2002-2003. Both have shown that they may get lucky and win big once but both have also shown that they cannot maintain winning programs. Larry continues to be the most overrated coach in our history.

I don't understand how some of you can love Eustachy and hate McDermott. I think Eustachy was overrated as a coach. He came in with everything in place to build a dynasty. He has Fizer, Rancick, Nurse and Johnson to work with. He did go out and pick up Tinsley and Horton in his second year and put together a good season. But then he began to fall apart. Who did we get to try and fill the place of those guys leaving? His record shows (below) that he had the chance to build something great and he didn't. Instead he brought in Shane Power, Tim Barnes, and Tyray Pearson as our go to guy. How do you go from Elite Eight, then a #2 seed then to 4-12 in conference in 01-02 and 5-11 the following year? And somehow people still loved him for some reason.
YearRecord1998-1999--15-15
1999-2000--32-5
2000-2001--25-6
2001-2002--12-19
2002-2003--17-14

McDermott on the other hand had nothing when he came except Rahshon. (Yes, he had Jiri, but not the Jiri that we saw at the end of last year and some of this year. He had a three point shooting Jiri when he came in. He brought in Wesley.) The cupboard was empty. He goes 6-10 and then 4-12 in conference and is trying to build something out of nothing. The records aren't good, but that is after two years of having nothing and Larry had an Elite Eight team and then went 4-12. McDermott is bringing in better talent than Larry did even though Larry had two Big 12 titles to help him recruit.

As two previous posters reminded us, LE's last two years were absolutely awful; I just don't get the Eustachy loyalty on this board.

You must be NUTS. Name me any other coach that has won the conference basketball regular season title at Iowa State.
We've have had many great basketball players here, but only LE put them together and won the title. Not only did he win the title, but did it back to back. He had some problems off the court, but he was far and away the best coach we've had, and I doubt we'll have another that good.

Better than Stinson, Blalock, etc? I don't think so.
I do believe and know for a fact that Morgan got those guys as an assistant. Eustachy brought in no one before Morgan was an assistant.

Why do you think Eustachy brought Morgan in? Recruiting. Can you imagine that combination with LE coaching them for 3/4 years?

"We've have had many great basketball players here, but only LE put them together and won the title. "

I am pretty sure Tim Floyd won the final Big Eight Tourney and made the sweet sixteen.

So he puts them together and wins, but there is more to coaching than that. You MUST be able to recruit.

So if Thad Matta goes 4-12 the next two or three years in conference Ohio State should keep him around for sure because they won a conference title or two with him?

I don't get it either. We didn't win an away Big 12 game his last year. And as said before he never got any recruits to fill the void. I remember watching those games his third year and going crazy because the only ones returning were Sullivan and Powers. And then Powers left. What did we have then??

Yeah boys if Larry Eustasy was so bad ...How many championships have the coaches won since Larry left Ames? NONE thats it!!!!!

Here's one fan who could stand some more of what Larry E was selling Championships boys thats where its at!!!!

and I doubt we'll have another that good.
I don't like pesamistic fans at ISU. Go join the Hawks and complain over there.

Larry left us in shambles with a guy like Morgan. He wasn't a head coach, he was a recruiter. He would have run us into the ground.

We haven't won any, but we can't when people want to switch coaches every couple of years. We need to give McDermott time. He can recruit, teach basketball, and manage a team and game situations.
