Eustachy is on KXNO

Better to be confused as the potato state instead of the "no shoes, KKK, missing teeth, stuck in the 50's" state :wideeyed:

Sorry for hijacking the thread btw.

Once one of our own jumped on here, I had to post a comment.

Our fan base is split over Eustachy. Some people despise Eustachy (as you have already seen). They think Eustachy is the worst coach in the world, and that Southern Miss needs to get rid of him ASAP.

Some people love Eustachy, and think that he is building our program back up from the ground floor.

I happen to be a Eustachy supporter. The guy has a great since of humor and has a reputation of being a tough coach that makes his players better (if they are tough enough to stick with him).

Football is king at Southern Miss, baseball has a pretty big following, and basketball runs a distant third. Very rarely do you hear anyone talk about USM basketball.

This is the harsh reality: Our very poor basketball facilities just got a face lift with new locker rooms, offices, and training facilities, but the arena itself is in sad shape. It is outdated and needs work. The budget for basketball is a joke. We play in a conference where the only schools that seem to care about basketball are Memphis and UAB. Recruiting basketball players to Southern Miss is a much tougher job than a lot of people realize. Not to mention that the previous coach left the program in shambles. This is by no means an easy turn around job. Some of our fans just do not have realistic expectations for a turn around.

I did read where someone pointed out that we played 4 Division II teams last year. It is true, and the coaches and administration caught a lot of heat from the fan base for doing it. I think we will see a much improved schedule this year. The philosophy was that the fans would rather see a home game than listen on the radio, and we have a hard time getting name teams to come to our place. The only game that we can attract people to right now is when Memphis comes to town. We will probably have to play a few more road games, but so be it.

We have seen progress over the past couple of seasons. We went deeper into the conference tournament (before running into Memphis) then the year before. We were obviously getting better. The expectations for this year are to reach some sort of post season play.

To sum it up, Eustachy took over a joke of a basketball program and some of our fans are displeased with how fast he is rebuilding. These people need to come back to reality and look at the tools we gave the man to rebuild with. I say he deserves more time.

Please, give it up. You are a fool. Eustachy has lost two years in a row to Savannah State. Defend that. As for the facilities, Eustachy himself when he showed up at USM said no facility had won or lost a game for him. The guy is an egotistical coach that thinks he is far better than his current position at USM. Well excuse me, but losing to Savannah State two years in a row blows Mr. Ego out of the water. You just want to live in the LE fantasy world he loves to play to. Facts are LE is a huge failure at USM and all of your b.s. spin won't change that fact.

Welcome Eagles fans. How did you find this thread anyway? Glad to see we are not the only fans that disagree on coaches. Hope you come back again and become Cyclone fans somehow.

So what do you consider a good year at USM? Apparently you must be used to deep tournament runs and top 25 finishes there if you're ready to throw his head on a stake after winning 19 and 20 games with 9-7 records in conference the last two years...so what would you consider a good year there?

Well good to see you Cyclone fans have gotten to see some of the best members of the EagleNation and the worst. I personally am in the air at this moment. I think LE has done a good job so far. He has beaten some teams he shouldn't and lost some he shouldn't but then again that's sports. What the ever pessimistic Eagle4Life forgets to tell you is that both of the games against Savannah State required Southern Miss Basketball to take a bus from Hattiesburg, MS to Savannah, GA because Men's Basketball doesn't get 1/4 of the funding that baseball and football due. Unfortunately for Eustachy the coach of USM before him left the pantry empty. He left 2 decently talented players that both transferred to NIAA school William Carey. Unfortunately for those players their talent was not enough to make up for their selfishness and ball hogging. I can say this sufficently as I worked with half the starting lineup for William Carey Basketball. Eustachy has done a decent job, but now he has some experienced guys that should be decent. While he have not been amazing our players are very good at "playing to the level of our opponent". We were one of only 2 CUSA teams to lose to Memphis by less double digits 2 years ago with a team of mostly freshmen. I believe Eustachy has done a decent job considering the hand he has been dealt and is a decent guy. You must also understand that there are those in the USM family that thinks since we are little ole USM there is no room for our coaches to have balls of any kind and be able to speak their mind. To slightly paraphrase Dan Hawkins "It's Division 1, you don't like it go play intramurals brother"

To most of the US, Iowa/Ohio/Idaho are apparently the same state so we got a lot of "Oh, the potato state right?"
This is re-hijacking the thread, but it's too hilarious/insane to not tell.

I was in New York a few years ago. I walked into a store and held the door open for a little elderly woman coming in behind me. She thanked me and said, "Well you're obviously not from around here, since you just did something nice for a total stranger and didn't ask for a tip. Where are you from?" I told her I was visiting from Iowa. She thought for a second, and then her face lit up with a big smile. She goes, "Oh, I've heard of you people! I've never gotten to meet one, though. Tell me, there's something I've always wondered ever since I learned it in school as a little girl. Do you really go out at night and throw potatoes at buffalo for fun? Is that what the kids do?"

I stood there at a complete loss for words, and just shook my head.

Okay, resume arguing about Eustachy and Mississippi.

In terms of actual butts in the seats it was more like an average of 1,500. LE is a disaster for Southern Miss. He came into this school like he was some great, bigtime basketball coach and would take us to the promised land.
In reality he has been a major flop and the only thing that has grown since he got here is his ego. If he was 1/10th the coach he thinks he is, USM would be doing great.
Don't misunderstand me, Southern Miss basketball was a joke when he showed up. USM fans understood he would need time. Well, he has had time. He is a failure.
Personally, I can't stand the guy. He is so full of himself it is sickening.
Southern Miss just fired a football coach with 14 straight winning seasons. I know expectations for basketball aren't anywhere close to what they are for football at USM, but Mr. Wonderful better at least get this USM team to the NIT this year or his *** is out of here.
I will take a young, talented, up and coming assistant that wants to prove himself, instead of a narcissistic, washed up has been as our basketball coach.

Easy slugger

Praise the Lord for you SMU fans hijacking this never-ending topic of LE, WM, Gmac....what a breath of fresh air.

From hear on out, when a "never-ending" topic comes up we go find some other schools fans to hijack these threads.

Thanks you SMU fans!!!

I live not too far from Hattiesburg and I was going to interject that Eustachy is on the radio in Iowa all the time because he can't get anyone in Mississippi to listen to him or pay attention to him...but the couple of Southern Miss fans beat me to it.

The reality is that football (and to a lesser extent baseball) are more passionately cared about in the deep south than basketball. Additionally, Southern Miss is a distant third in the state of Mississippi behind Ole Miss and Miss State in terms of stature.

I continue to be dismayed at the popularity he retains among some in Iowa. The bottom line in my opinion is that he is doing a marginal job at Southern Miss and I am glad that he is no longer the coach at ISU.

Good thing messages boards wern't around when McCarney was hired. He got his second chance, why couldn't LE?

USM = University of Southern Mississippi

SMU = Southern Methodist University

Did LE explain it to you that teams were afraid to schedule a game at your gym? Some Cyclone fans actually believed that excuse..... and still do.

Not necessarily that they are afraid, but we can't pay them enough to make it worth their trp.
