ESPN Laying Off Additional On-Air Personalities

Most takes on espn content is right on. Too much entertainment and too much of the same topics on every talk show.
- The 6 is horrible, Michael and Jemeel had 2 or 3 failed shows prior to it yet keep getting on.
- Each daily talk show had unique aspects but most now cover the same topics. HQ had great videos (bear chasing biker) but now the same video is on every show.
- M and M now has 4 topics they repear over 4 hours to fill content and have the same guests every oyher show has for the day. As much time as Golic has taken off I thought he might be gone.

That said i liked R and K, Kanell had an honest take on things regardless what others thought.
Yeah it's bad, like all of their shows. Has Dan Dakich been laid off?

In all seriousness. Don't feel bad for me. I'll be ok. I'm just going to miss all the great people I worked with. My last day is tomorrow.

Man, that sucks for Hassel. I might be in the minority here but I like Hassel and I thought he did a great job despite the fact that he is a huge Iowa homer. He's crazy talented and will land on his feet.

Hassel is great, sucks to see him go. Thought he might have been cheap enough to keep on ESPN.

I really what to know what ESPN's thought process was when making selections. Someone like Hassel, who is talented and likely comes at an affordable salary, is laid off but Stephen A Smith (so far) is safe, is hard to handle/like and is paid $3.5M.

The guy with the pricey contract may also have a contract that includes more severance than one of the cheaper people.

But yeah, it seems like there's a lot of good talent leaving that network, especially on the written side.

Stephen A Smith is a net moneymaker for ESPN. People hate him, but hate him or not, his show gets ratings and is profitable. Nobody tunes into ESPN for Chris Hassel, no matter how cheap he is. There are plenty of other people still at ESPN who can fill in for Hassel. Not many that can do what Smith does.

Here is the deal. The people getting laid off are on shows. Stephen A. Smith brings ratings on his own show. If his show was not making them money he would be gone. Hassell is not making them money on his own show. He is another anchor they don't need. Even though I love hassell the common theme is they are cutting employees who are on there Sportscenter, NFL, Hockey, type shows. Not people who have a show of there own. So no they won't fire Stephen A. Smith or whatever idiot that has there own show that advertisers pay money to advertise on.

So I see today is sports media meets corporate American. Every KXNO personality is crying wolf. Welcome to the real world, sports journalism.

Pretty sure this type of stuff has been happening to all kinds of journalism for years now. These guys are just public facing people.

ESPN would rather have character roles like Stephen A. Smith opposed to actual talent. That's really what it boils down to. ESPN is cutting some of their best writers to keep guys like him around. Not good for the long haul.

Very true, but now that their boy Hassel got cut, everything is wrong!

Give me a break. He makes smart ass remarks about sports highlights.

They are all members of close knit community and that is struggling to survive in the ever changing sports media world. Hassel is a talented dude and of course those guys are going to be biased! They worked with him and they know first hand how hard he was worked to get where he is at.
