Espn Big 12 North: Ubben Breakdown

Pretty sure Kansas doesn't play Texas, Oklahoma, or Texas Tech next year. That's probably why some are predicting them to finish higher than most people would expect.

This guy has us finishing 5th in the North but finishing last in the Big 12...
Also what's up with KSU?

If KU doesn't have Texas, OU, or TT... then I think they will finish higher than us. KU usually schedules big time cupcakes out of conference as well.

Our schedule will be our downfall. I have no idea what we were thinking with having this schedule? We aren't fighting for a national championsip, so our strength of schedule won't mean jack squat. So why make it nearly impossible to get back to a bowl game? I don't get it?

We probably won't be back to a bowl game until 2012. I hope not, but I'm prepared for it. Afterall, we are ISU. Just when we get halfway decent again, our schedule is one of the toughest in the country for the next two years. Gotta love it!! Another kick to the groin.

Wow...I don't know if it's possible, but this guy could end up being worse than Tim Griffin. It's not off to a good start to say the least...

Quit your ********. The players on this team aren't complaining about the schedule. Probabaly to the contrary...they relish it. I'd be willing to bet CPR and staff wouldn't want it any other way.

On topic, this guy, picking us behind KU, KSU and CU, is a ******. Plus, IMO, Tech is going to experience some of the worst transition pains around. it may take them a couple years (long enough for the schedule to flip, for those worried about that sort of thing) to be decent again, and I'm still not convinced that's a given.

It's obvious that this dingleberry has done about as much research when it comes to ISU as every other national outlet. It seems he's picking us at the bottom because we have "only four starters returning" on defense.

Really? Let's have a look. Here is the depth chart from the Insight Bowl. Underclassmen are denoted in bold, departed players in italics:

Defensive Line
Patrick Neal, So.
Bailey Johnson, Jr.
Nate Frere, Sr.
Christopher Lyle, Sr.

Linebacker
Josh Raven, Sr.
Jesse Smith, Sr.
*Fred Garrin, Sr.

Secondary
Leonard Johnson, So.
David Sims, Jr.
Ter'ran Benton, So.

James Smith, Sr.
*Kennard Banks, Sr.
(Since we play a LOT of Nickel, I've listed Garrin as 3rd LB and Banks, who started most of the season. Benton was usually the Nickel Back)

That's five starters returning. However, if we look at players who got starting experience last year, we add...

Defensive Line
Rashawn Parker, Sr. (medical redshirt) - NDSU, Iowa, Kent St., Army
Austin Alburtis, Jr. - NDSU, Iowa, Kent St.
Stephen Ruempolhamer, So. - Army, KSU

Secondary
Michael O'Connell, Jr. - NDSU, Kent St., Texas A&M, OSU, CU
Zac Sandvig, Jr. - Texas A&M

Parker would have started all season over Neal or Lyle. O'Connell played quite a bit of time when Smith and Benton were injured. Add Rony Nelson (fingers crossed) for a pass rush and Anthony Young to step up in place of Kennard Banks and the only real, gaping issue is the linebackers. This team is nowhere near as green as Ubben thinks.

Mizzou will be interesting to see how they develop, their only big spark on defense is gone(weatherspoon) their already shaky defense could get much worse. And the offense still won't have a run game, and with the big play receiver(Alexander) gone, you have to wonder if Gabbert won't have worse numbers.
