Good article, but I wish he would mention if he likes it here or if he wishes he could still play for Michigan or Michigan State. Ah who am I kidding, Big 10 sucks, I think he figured out who was the better coach.

I liked the part where DeAndre kicked his *** in practice every day. I'm sure that wasn't pleasant at the time, but I can only imagine how much that advanced him as a player very early in his career. MM going from fringe/rotational guard to core starter (with the highest 3% on the team, that record-breaking A/T ratio, and considerable potential as an outside defender) all within his freshman year was pretty impressive.
I always thought last year's team could have used Babb more than anybody else--they needed another shooter, handler, and defender to take the pressure off Kane. Turns out we got got that by mid-season when Monte really came online. I hope it only becomes better from here.

I'll never forget the interview of Monte after we signed Kane where Monte straight-up said how dissapointed he was that we signed Kane, essentially recruiting over him. Its just funny how things work out because I firmly believe Kane coming to ISU was the best thing that could have ever happened to Monte. Not only did Kane beat the crap out of Monte and challenge him to get better in practice (not sure there would have been a tougher guy to guard in college bball), but Kane also took all the pressure off Monte for his freshman campaign where he was allowed to grow at his own pace, rather than get thrown into the fire right off the bat. Then, even when Monte started, he still had no pressure on him to do anything special with guys like Kane, Ejim and Niang already leading the way. Monte essentially just took what was there and given to him, which is exactly what made him so valuable.
Next year will be different though since he'll definitely have to take more of the load on his shoulders, but the good thing is that he won't have to take all the load with others like Niang and BDJ on the floor, and what he does have to take on, I firmly believe he is ready for it. Thank Mr. Kane for that. Funny how things work out.

I completely agree with everything you said. I remember an interview during the season where I believe Monte even said that Kane was the best thing for his development.
The greatest thing for me is that yes maybe Kane was over recruting Monte, but look at how Hoiberg managed that. By mid season Monte was starting because he showed he had to be on the floor.
I feel like some coaches would have kept Monte on the bench because Kane was the "better PG". We're lucky to have Hoiberg who understands how to manage players and could see that moving Kane off the ball would make the team better.
Credit also to Kane who made it clear to everyone that he just wanted to win and everything he did was toward that end. He helped out other players toward that end and they all profited from it.
Yeah, I definitely remember the interview happened for sure. I don't think it was an article either, but rather a preseason or summer Cyclones.tv interview. I also remember thinking uh-oh after it, boy, I hope CFH can find a way to keep this kid happy. I know he wasn't mad, but just expressed a little dissapointment is all. Wish I had a link, but I don't remember the interview getting much publicity either, but I definitely remembered it simply for the fact that I thought it might come back to bite us later on possibly. Guess not though. In CFH we trust.
