Enrollment in the Big 12

The University of Iowa is very unhappy about being the smaller university in this state and they are pouring millions into their in-state marketing and in-state freshman scholarships so they can "buy" students away from Iowa State. They're spouting off the the media already that they will bring in a record smashing freshman class this fall.

Meanwhile, Iowa State's freshman class this fall will still be significantly larger than Iowa's record smashing class, but you don't hear Iowa State boasting to the media about it. That's not how we operate.
Pretty much the opposite of what I have heard. They want more in-state students, but they're not trying to keep up with our enrollment at all (i.e. they're fine with their current pace of growth, knowing that it makes them the 2nd largest).

Plus, like others have already stated, we consistently brag about being the largest.

ISU grew too much, too fast anyway. It was one of Leath's big pushes when he got here, but he didnt account for the housing situation, either on campus or in Ames as a whole. I mean the number of new complexes that went up in the last 4 years is crazy.

Yeah its cool that we are the biggest in the state, but the growth was rushed.

The growth of both schools is the result of the board of regents pushing each school to raise enrollment, particularly with Iowans.

The More students from the state of Iowa, the more funding each university gets from the state. UofI was facing a funding cut due to its lower percentage of students from the state of Iowa.

We have a great engineering college that has a lot to do with our growth - very high demand for these jobs right now.

Both schools have probably benefitted from their Agricultural colleges taking advantage of the big boom in ag over the last decade. Oh wait...

Besides TTU no one else is really that close to us, and I am assuming that a good portion of TTU's students are distant/online?

The growth in our school's enrollment is vital for our athletic programs. More donors, more families getting to campus, more people to buy tickets, positive momentum for the school, etc are all positive benefits from the growth.

Texas Tech went so far as to offer New Mexico border towns in-state tuition. Those towns are 100 miles away from the Tech campus. They had to do it due to Lubbocks remote location, they were having trouble attracting students.

Really? Unlike UH, Texas Tech is not a commuter school. There are 3 public universities in Texas whose student bodies are >90% full-time, physically present students. UT, ATM, and yes, TTU. Hell, Tech just upped its student football sections to accommodate 17,000 students. Like Walter Matthau said in the original Bad News Bears..."when you assume, you make an ass out of you and me." ;)

Notice it's NM border towns only. That's more about proximity and recruiting NM's most talented students. 70% of Texas Tech students come from the suburbs of DFW, Austin, Houston and San Antonio, and there is no shortage of applicants. What's really pathetic is OU, OSU, and Arkansas offering in-state tuition and lower admission standards to ALL Texas high school students.

Killbilly, please reload your avatar wasn't it the guns up girl? If not please ignore my request. By the way how is your FB team looking this year?

How do you expect them to recruit FB players if they raise standards and tuition costs?

We shall persevere! Actually, Kliff's parents are both school teachers. During his first speech to Tech professors after he got the HC job, he told them football players are still students and they deserve no special treatment. He meant it. Good character is equally important as talent when recruiting under his watch. It's impossible to 100% root-out youthful stupidity but Tech has had far fewer problems with player behavior/criminal issues than most, if not all of the B12 schools. I need an angel emoticon. Donde esta vatos?!?;)

This is not true. UI is still getting more state funding despite having fewer students. Why? Even after the Board of Regents proposed a fix when the enrollment lines crossed at the universities, Johnson County state legislators teamed up to shoot down any changes to the funding in order to protect UI, at ISU's expense.
