I have to correct myself. It appears the Iowa legislature recently passed a bill that makes it illegal to fly a drone less than 400 feet above a private residence without the owner's consent.
Violation of this law is a simple misdemeanor, unless the drone is recording data which would make it a serious misdemeanor.
I occasionally fly my drone, and I launch it from my house which means I have to fly it over houses in our neighborhood. Even though I never hover over anyone's house, I guess I've been breaking the law for some time now.
Where I live in NJ we’re approaching true hysteria.
A few notes:
1.) now that it’s gone in people heads, everyone is seeing airplanes at night and assuming they’re drones (NJ is a heavily populated state with the lots of commercial and private plane activity.
2.) to the ‘SHOOT EM DOWN!!!’ crowd: supposedly these real drones are the size of ‘an suv’, flying several hundred feet in the air for the most part, and over densely populated areas. Not easy to bring down with civilian guns, and even if you did, they could cause serious damage to people and property

Re 2: thankful this hasn’t yet come to KC. People will now be firing for Chiefs wins/touchdowns, holidays and free alien meat to smoke, slather, and sell at a huge profit.

I learned around 1996 that you can shoot huge ships down and they just land on the horizon away from the post- earth saving celebrations.
I agree with this. But then you have people wondering why the government wont tell the people anything at all. Even when asked. Just something to appease the masses and curb any hysteria. People love to get worked up over stuff like this. If you know what is going on, just say something...anything.
All they have to say is that it’s not foreign, they know what it is and there’s no threat to the public. We don’t need to know anything else.
We should all have our super old Apple computers at the ready.
Yeah, the talking point of we don't know what they are but somehow we know they aren't a threat isn't going to add up for anyone.
And the its just misidentified planes isn't going to hunt either. There is no reason why all these people would all of a sudden be misidentifying the same general aviation aircraft that we see every single day. Tell me another one.
Because not everything is the common persons business.
There are many top secret things the gov does that common people don't have or need access to.
And then everyone would say “ok thanks government, we don’t need to know anything else, we trust you”. Easy. Done.
