I’ve had some slam on their brakes 2 car lengths short so they technically stop before me (they don’t stop the car just nose dives a bit) and then gun it so it looks like they stopped before me. Had several people behind a semi tailgate them through the intersection so they don’t have to wait for anyone else.

The stop sign right of way is like turning into the near lane. Yes, there’s laws controlling it, but no one really follows them. You drive as you want and yield to others to avoid accidents.

New Mexico has some of the worst drivers in the country. Last year, my son was hit head on by a guy who decided to run a red light and not even attempt to brake to avoid the accident. My son only had his driver's license for two days when this happened and it took him months before he was wanting to drive again.

Everyone thinks they are a good driver. And everyone is wrong. We all suck, but as long as we pay attention and generally follow the rules hopefully we arrive safely.

When I get frustrated with the lack of general and spatial awareness of other drivers it usually means I'm being impatient and need to step back.

I have noticed that when riding with a bad driver they will complain more about other drivers that actually are not doing anything wrong. They just see it as bad because they really are poor at understanding normal driving behavior.

I believe this is still the law in Iowa but not in all states. I had family members keep telling me that I was breaking the law in Minnesota for turning into the lane I would need to be in for my next turn instead of the closest lane (obviously in single turn lane situations). I had to show them the Minnesota drivers manual that states "finish your turn in any lane available to you."

I also had my FIL getting on me about Left Turn on Red. It is legal from a one way to a one way in most states, but I think at the time Iowa was one of a handful of states that didn't allow it. I have a one way to one way left turn on my way home from work and I still feel like I'm going to get busted every time I do it even though I know it is legal in Minnesota.

I've used this one in Chicago where I gun it to turn left just as the light turns green. You have to make sure that no one in the cross-traffic is coming through late. If there is a lull in cross-traffic, but not head-on traffic, I just might use it. However, if I tried it in Iowa, some onlooker might call a cop on me.

You also have to be sure that the oncoming traffic isn't trying to beat each other off the line. If you get in an accident you will clearly be at fault.

Damn, hopefully you son is ok. It doesn't take much sped for a head-on collision to be pretty severe. That's pretty traumatic for anyone, much less a young driver just starting out

When I lived downtown KC I regularly ran reds. Those lights are synced terribly and you constantly hit every red. If there was no one in sight I stopped and went. Buddy who worked downtown told me to do it after a co worker who was a former KCPD officer told him they never pull people over for it. I bet I ran over 100 reds in those 2 years, most were at 630 in the morning going to work when there was no traffic.

This works until the city needs revenue suddenly worried about safety and installs red light cameras. As those are run by for profit companies, no grace will be given for the streets being empty.

That's what plate covers are for. Also it's KC which has a huge problem with fake temp tags. Go to a chiefs game and every other tailgating bus you see will have temp tags that are fake because they never registered the vehicle.
