Drexel review

I don’t know a ton and it was disappointing but they said Drexel was a top 25 team last year. Not good but you are making it worse than it was.
And on top of that..if we had everyone healthy and had our best wrestlers at each weight.. we'd win by 15+...

125 - We had a walk-on who was club wrestling last year - 6 point swing
149 - We had our 4th best wrestler at 149 out there - 6 point swing
157 and 165 - both should have won
174 - Coleman would have majored that kid if he wasn't redshirting - 7 point swing
197 - Colbray should NEVER be getting beat by kids like that, let alone getting pinned - 9 point swing at the very least

That is a 28 point swing...

We will be fine. We will get better and better as the year goes by with people getting healthy (hopefully) and kids improving. Our conditioning and effort already look way better.

We will be so much better already next year..

125: ??? - We need a transfer or big time recruit badly (Aaron Cashman would be huge to get)
133: Gomez
141: Parker
149: Storr
157: Leisure/Degen/Dante - I really like Leisure if he can grow into a 157
165: Carr
174: Coleman
184: Bush
197: Colbray - So much talent here, but I don't know if he will be the guy here much longer*
HWT: Harrington
Plus we already have a commitment from the #13 overall junior in Chris Foca who is projected as a 174/184. Also we have studs Joel Shapiro, Grant Stotts and Anthony Sherry coming in around those weights also

This is correct. I’d give it a 9 point swing at 49 as well. I don’t see anyway Dante doesn’t stick that kid and Degen at least picks up a major. You are seeing the growing pains with this new staff. This year is lost. The best we can do is hope for some good individual results. Parker, Storr, Pestano, and Harrington could all do some good things individually.

I'll echo the few that have said they were pleasantly surprised. I am not "worried" by the loss to Drexel. I am excited about the tempo our guys had, even in defeat. This was the first dual I've attended as a season ticket holder. The turnaround has officially begun and I'm happy that I was there for the first dual.

So, in your opinion, that wouldn't be the team of which I'm a season ticket holder? Weird.

I believe crablegs is a Hawk fan, but because of location attend a lot of Cyclone meets. So he gets some lead way with me

Drexel a top 25 team last year? No, they tied for 53rd. Wrestlestat has them ranked 59th out of 77 D1 dual teams. They are most likely the weakest team we will see in a dual this year.

The crowd and energy was great, the aggressiveness was good for the most part, but the overall result was piss poor. We got a LONG WAY to go.

Yeah, it was a disappointment, but I'm not worried. Can't turn a program around in 9 months.

Looking forward to getting to the point where our backups handle a Drexel-like program with ease, and I'm confident this staff will get us there.

That’s what Kyven said. LIke I said don’t know but they seemed positive about their program. I didn’t do any verifying so I don’t know but that’s where I got my info.

Thought we had a good shot to win it but can't say I was surprised by the outcome. I fully expect to see similar results throughout the season but also think we'll see steady improvement. Success for me won't be so much a W/L thing as much as just wanting to see guys pushing the pace and competing with everything they've got. For the most part I was happy with how the guys wrestled yesterday except for a few that I thought could have done more.

Parker, Storr, Pestano, and Harrington were obviously good and I won't bother to comment further because their wrestling speaks for itself.

Jakob Allison showed a lot of grit fighting back after being in trouble early. Went into the match just hoping he wouldn't get pinned so I was pleasantly surprised and pretty impressed with how tough he was on top.

Dewitt was probably the most disappointing for me because he could have had that much but he was too complacent. Spent way too much time locked up and anchored down instead of circling and trying to make something happen. I realize he won't be the starter for most of the season but he's got potential and should have won that match.

Straw's loss was also disappointing because he seemed really gassed and would have won if he was in better shape.

Breitenbach didn't look great overall but he showed some flashes especially fighting off that TD on the edge.

Entzel wrestled hard and pushed late to try to get the TD but he never should have been in a position to have to win us the meet. Coleman would have mopped the floor with that kid but I won't question the coaches keeping the redshirt on.

Colbray got caught in a tough spot by a decent wrestler so I probably shouldn't be too hard on him but I really don't have a lot of faith in the guy at this point. His demeanor just doesn't look like a guy who cares all that much. Really hope I'm way off base here.

ISU shouldn't be in a spot where we lose to Drexel but it's where we are right now. The good news is we've got a guy leading the charge who has successfully built programs up at different levels. Christiansburg barely had a team if I remember right and he led them to 5 state titles and a top 5 national ranking. Va Tech was on the verge of cutting wrestling altogether and Dresser turned them into a trophy team. He's been successful but it took time and it will here as well. We should see a faster turnaround than Va Tech but it will still take longer than most of us would like to see. We all just need to keep in mind that Rome wasn't built in a day. These first couple maybe even few years will be frustrating at times but it will be worth the wait.

They said that Drexel beat a top25 program last year (Princeton was ranked no. 25 at the time)..Drexel most definitely wasn't a top 25 program last year (or this year)

I don't think this should be a lost year (not a top five year or anything, but not lost). Last season was a disaster because of the management, not because of the talent in the room. The cupboard isn't totally bare like it was in 2010. There's a solid base in the room already.

I agree we will be fine. 125 will get straightened out before long and hats off to a walk on for doing what he did when he was called upon. Hopefully Dante can stay out of trouble long enough to wrestle consistently. Straw was tired, but he is good. As Dresser said in the press conference,he is usually very consistent. I give kudos to Gavin for stepping up too. He has been a nice surprise. Logan has been banged up and has not been able to practice like normal, so I expect him to be up to speed soon too. Everyone is forgetting about Swalla at 174. He has battled injury, but he used to give Lelund a run for his money in the room last year. I think he is hurt again, but if he can get healthy he will win some matches at 174 for us. In my opinion, this staff will work the kinks out. If the projected starters can stay healthy and follow the rules, we will do some good things this year. They're just getting started!

I agree with everything you are saying except that it is a lost year. Far from it. It is a year that the staff must set the culture (which they are doing now) and continue to build confidence in fans, recruits, and the wrestlers on the team. Dresser is certainly not afraid to call kids out for not working hard in practice (Colbray). Hopefully Parker can show everyone on this team what hard work every day and living the lifestyle every day will do for you!

You are right. This is an important year for the staff to set the new culture.

Wouldn't surprise me if he ends up RS and you will only see him at Opens. We have four Freshmen RS at 174. They'll keep Coleman RS but would not be surprise if Franklin or Southard get a look later in the season. No reason to RS all of them if they can help and get some matches this season.

Bush isn't a high quality D1 wrestler and I think he might have redshirted as a freshman.

As for the results...eh...not too worried about them this year. To say this is a marathon, not a sprint, is an understatement.
