Downtown Royals Stadium

As a life long Chiefs and Royals fan I HATE them leaving that area. But the city had 50 years to figure out how to make that area some type of destination place. Instead they did Jack ____. Actually they did less than that. It's like they gave up 20-25 years ago.
The history of how the Truman Sports Complex came to be is pretty fun to read: https://www.jchs.org/jchs-e-journal/2024/8/8/its-future-uncertain-its-past-a-blast

I can't find them right now, but there were some pretty cool plans for development of that area after the stadiums were built. It never really materialized as there are three cities who all have land out in that area, and it made it extremely complicated.

Edit: Here is the blog I was looking for talking about how complicated developing the area was: https://open.substack.com/pub/eileennormileweir/p/major-league?r=1mxipp&utm_medium=ios

I live in Shawnee and I would much rather drive downtown for a game. I love the idea of a downtown stadium. We always end up there after games anyway.

I don't think building their own entertainment district is feasible. They would have to ask for more tax payer money and Jackson Co hasn't exactly been willing to eagerly shell out dough for the Royals...which is one of the reasons they're in the pickle they're in...and why they don't want to bring the Washington Park site to a public vote.
They are going to have to get state or local tax money to build a new stadium, why not use that money to build a new power and light area out at the Truman Complex? Jackson Co. has already lost the Chiefs, if they are unwilling to provide the funds then they deserve to lose the Royals as well. I would bet you could build quite a bit where they are with the money that they are going to spend to build an entire new stadium. It seems like to an outsider that many want a new stadium built downtown, I guess I wonder why they want to spend more doing that, then building infrastructure where they currently are and build up that area.

Ever been to power and light when there's not a big event going on? It's a ghostown a lot of weekends. So many random weekends I went and Howl at the Moon was packed but the rest was dead. An entertainment district would fail miserably at Truman.

I believe Kaufmann has some structural issues and it would take some extensive work to renovate. I think it makes the most financial sense no matter where they do it to build a new stadium.

Building a competing entertainment district with P&L and Crossroads makes no sense. Nobody would go out to Independence/Raytown for it and the Royals don't pull the crowds the Chiefs do, so it probably wouldn't be sustainable.

They're doing a lot to the downtown and surrounding area. They're building a green space over I-70 to connect downtown to the Crossroads so people can walk back and forth. Crossroads is blowing up with restaurants and bars. It would be directly North of the new stadium site.

There's all the entertainment area you need adjacent to the proposed new stadium site.

And they've built so many apartments/condos/townhomes in the downtown/city market/Crossroads area that the downtown population is something like 30,000 people.

I moved here in 1998 and it's truly amazing what the downtown area has become. It was a literal ghosttown in 1998.

It really makes all the sense in the world to add a baseball stadium to all of that.

And get an NHL team for the T-Mo center!

That would be a great idea 30 years ago. Time has passed the TSC I'm afraid.

Target is great, went to a ton of games when I had a co-op in Minneapolis (well Chanhassen). Hop on the interstate after work, drive straight into the parking garage and you're in the stadium.
Big difference here for the potential KC stadium is that the highway access at this location sucks. There isn't going to be a large parking garage right off the interstate.

No doubt. Targets setup will be impossible to beat pretty much anywhere. That may be the only doubt I have with a KC downtown stadium, the interstate/highway system downtown is absolute garbage.

Target is an outstanding stadium with a great setup.

And they are spending 60 million less in payroll than the Royals playing at the K this year.

It would fail miserably if there was no residential component to it. So much land out there, and you could easily add a lot of residential units to make a district very viable.

I wonder if Trice could be inserted for Truman using the same rationale.

Without football or concerts at Arrowhead, there are ~90 days that there are major events at TSC with Royals games and random events like the Savana Bananas.

The Iowa State Center hosts the 6/7 football games, 36 basketball games, 8 wrestling meets, 10 volleyball meets, Boy's basketball state tournament, various career fairs and conferences, and a handful of concerts/shows a month at CY Stephens. The ISC is also the commuter parking lot for ISU students and faculty.

ISC will see about the same number of events as TSC moving forward, but it is also more centrally located within the city.

Love it. Now extend the street car to Waldo and put a team together worth getting excited for.

Don't have a lot of familiarity with KC area...hit up a few Royals/Chiefs games in my life though...what will become of the current site? There doesn't seem to be much around that area...that is a huge amount of land! Kind of sad...but downtown stadiums are awesome!

Well it's the Raytown area so probably a dump site.

Seriously though I both love and hate this at the same time. Downtown stadium will be great but I have a lot of good memories at that complex......
