I’d say inland in the UP is more like the Deep South of the far North.

Its some beautiful country, but driving from Picture Rocks to St. Ignace, I would tell the kids, OK, there’s a town in 12 miles and you can go to the bathroom. Then 12 miles later there was just an abandoned hotel, maybe a couple houses. Getting your town listed on a mileage sign on the highway in the UP doesn’t take much.

I read some time ago the the way the UP became part of Michigan was a result of the Federal gov settling a dispute over which state (Ohio or Mich) had Toledo within it's boarder. Toledo was a big sea port at the time. Seems Michigan and Ohio actually brought out the state militias and had a confrontation including shots fired. The fed stepped in to resolve the issue and game Toledo to Ohio and took the UP from the "Wisconsin territory" and gave it to Michigan as compensation for giving up rights to Toledo and the area called the Toledo triangle.

No wonder Mich and OSU don't get along. LOL

Oregon will probably need an interception or two. From what I’ve seen Brock Purdy does make some throws that lend themselves to interceptions, not anywhere as bad as Shough so the DBs will need to capitalize.

In 2019 Oregon led the country in INTs, but the guys who opted out had 8/20 of those. This year they’ve only had five picks, and all of those came in two games. Injuries or corona/quarantine have meant the two back up CBs missed all but one game. Jamal Hill the roving nickel that’s key in the 3-3-5 missed a few games and is back now, had the two picks against USC. At 6’1 210 he’s sized like a safety and was supposed to be the breakout new guy on the defense.

Obviously getting pressure will be key, and I imagine Campbell and company are scheming ways to neutralize Kayvon Thibodeaux. Oregon also likes to bring blitz from the ILB spot.

On the other side it looks like other than that fantastic LB Rose there aren’t too many INTs for ISU. Why is that? Is it a scheme or a personnel issue? In either case, if Oregon starts Shough expect him to throw to a DB or a LB and hope they can catch it - because they’ll be confused on why the ball is being thrown right at them. Shough also underthrows it and has a hard time throwing down the field over the middle as opposed to the sidelines, where he’s pretty good.

* Oregon’s in house practice reports are purposely not saying anything about which QB was throwing at who. Either a smokescreen or a sign that Anthony Brown may play, or him and Shough will split reps again. Brown was a multi year starter at Boston College.
* Still down a lot of guys, Covid quarantine or injury - we don’t know. The fourth string QB has been playing other positions, had a tackle on a kick off last week. Oregon was one or two guys away from not meeting the Pac-12 minimum of available players against USC.
* Our defensive coordinator interviewed for the Boise State head coaching job, he played and coached there. In any case he’d call the game. The DL coach was a candidate for Arizona head coach, and may be a DC candidate there.
Fun fact: Arizona’s defensive coordinator: Paul Rhoads. They gave up 70 points to Arizona State.

Anything new with Iowa State? I saw that Bankston fellow is transferring, it looks like you have other big bodies.

Random question that has nothing to do with football: why does Iowa have so many tiny counties? I just looked it up and there’s 99 counties, while Oregon is nearly double in size and has 36. Some of the ones that are the size of Connecticut are just high desert or mountains, but even our highly populated ones are much bigger.

Random question that has nothing to do with football: why does Iowa have so many tiny counties? I just looked it up and there’s 99 counties, while Oregon is nearly double in size and has 36. Some of the ones that are the size of Connecticut are just high desert or mountains, but even our highly populated ones are much bigger.

We want to be able to reach the county seat on horseback by noon, and we’re unwilling to consider any alternative.

a surveyor was supposed to walk from mouth of Des Moines river across x amount of miles to make the southern iowa border. The surveyor started from the west side was about 15-18 miles off when making his border thus causing Iowa’s tip in the south east portion of the state. Those northern most Missouri counties were supposed to belong to iowa.

I hate to say it but I've abandoned the notion of trying to get a solid analysis for this game. Which is too bad because knowing something about your opponent makes game day so much more rewarding. Will there even be a game? And if there's a game how will covid effect the rosters. Tip of the cap, though, to the Cyclone fans who dropped a bunch knowledge in this thread.

I also didn't see enough football this season to really get invested. The Ducks won the PAC12 title at 4-2 (lol). The bowl schedule to date has also just been god awful. I think the 2-8 Gamecocks play in a bowl today. Though I might watch the C. Carolina game.

So the time has probably come to work up a prediction and sally forth towards January 2nd like a normie fan.

IMHO, it seems like there have been quite a few times where Cyclone defenders have been in great position for an interception but just could not come up with it. Having lived in CO for several years and traveling around all parts of the state, I can confirm that there are some absolute redneck areas. An interesting dichotomy around Telluride.

When I think 'redneck' I think of people that I grew up around that were generally pleasant folks who liked cheap beer and mud running with their trucks, but had basic hygiene and communication skills.

I was half expecting to be followed on my drive out of this one. Judgmental on my part but these folks looked rough.

It’s been such a crap season, and I’m not talking about the results. So few games, no spring ball or real fall camp for Pac-12 teams, no non-con schedule, teams playing with shoestring rosters.

The results have included: teams like BYU thinking that they’re better than they are off a schedule of pillows, unpredictable results, analytics have been almost useless with such a small sample size, comparing stats is pointless, roster development stunted. I don’t even want to think about the 2022 recruiting class - Cristobal managed to get some visits in right before it got shut down and got commits without visits, but 2022 is gonna be difficult without having have had those kids for SNL in the summer or for unofficials in the fall.

There hasn’t been much written about this game in the media or blogs considering it’s a Fiesta Bowl. I’m also not digging the narrative on Oregon. They’ve sucked at times, but c’mon - two losses by a combined seven points where Oregon should/could have won by a few scores doesn’t make it the disaster it’s been hailed as.

I’m still excited for this Fiesta Bowl, and getting to see a program we’ve never faced. This is a really good Cyclone team, I want to see our guys play them even if they’re depleted.

It did. It was called the honey war. Both sides sent their militias to the border. Just not at the same time.

It's my understanding that Iowa ended up with so many counties so that you could make it to the county seat and back home easily in a day during the horse and buggy days. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me.

What was the fans take on FB this fall were you with the conference presidents or did you guys want to start? I'm really glad the B12 went with a season, it helped that ISU has been really good/lucky with Covid testing and staying in the bubble. I think Baylor is the only team in the B12 that had lots of problems maintaining quarantine.
