I am supposed to be getting my system installed today and I was wondering if I need a phone line to get this installed?
My wife and I ditched our land line several years ago for cell phones.
Do I have to have one? Years ago I needed one for digital cable but not anymore.

I have never had a phone line hooked to my receiver and I have had Directv for 7 years.

Nope - we don't have a phone line (just cell phones) and it works perfectly fine...

They'll tell you that you need it, but I haven't had mine plugged in for years. It's necessary to order PPV and stuff, but there are ways around this, too.

Thanks. Bored sitting at home waiting for the guy and read something online that said I needed it for PPV movies and such.
I thought that sounded strange.

Without it you can't order PPV with one click on your TV, you will need to call them to order or use their website. I do the latter.

you need it if you want to order ppv with your remote. you can still order that by phone and I think online without it being plugged in a phone jack.

The guy that installed mine said that the only reason they encourage that is so they can track your viewing habits, but as others have said, you cannot order PPV without it. When I had DISH, I ran a hundred foot phone line to the tv whenever I wanted PPV, which wasn't often.

If he ever shows up I will.:skeptical: I suppose that is another story for another thread.

It's ridiculous, isn't it?

I really wish I had the nerve to tell Directv that I will pay them between January and July, much like they say "We'll be there between 10 AM-4 PM.

I had a bad dish and had to get someone out to repair it a couple weeks ago. It took them 2 1/2 weeks to get someone out.

The reason is that the company that Directv contracts with locally went out of business because the CEO was under investigation for among other things, paying his 5 year old daughter an executive salary.

SO...now that company has been purchased by another and they are trying to get their ducks in a row.

I wish someone would pay me an executive salary.

They will also activate it if you have an internet connection to the receiver (which you will also need for Dish on Demand, if you want it). With an active internet connection, you do not need a phone line.

Occasionally installers will not activate your receivers without a phone line. It sort of depends on the guy. I ran a 20 ft phone cable to satisfy the guy and then unplugged it when he left.

Having DirecTV installed in my duplex in Ames on Friday. I just hope they have a line of sight as there are some large trees lining the south and the landlord doesn't want the dish installed on the roof.

Well I do not have a phone line so i guess they will have to install it without. Which will be tomorrow by the way since they called and said they couldn't make it today.
I feel like going Kramer on these guys after sitting around 4 hours today.
They are starting off well with me.

Sat.TV

I have Dish and they told me the same thing about the phone line.
The only reason I hooked it up is I get the caller I.D. info on my TV screen. Then I can decide if I want to get my fat *** off my recliner and answer the G.D. phone!

Here is my Direct TV story the first day they were supposed to come out they actually came out 2 hrs early which no one was there cause we had it set up for noon - 4 they came at 10. After arguing with them they waited outside my house then tried to get me to pay $60 cash to have the dish put on a pole in my back yard. I told them I wanted it on my house (new development no trees in neighborhood). He also did not bring my HD box and said he would not go get it and told me if I wanted I could go to the Direct TV place and get it myself. So I told him to leave. After talking to Direct TV they set me for a new installation the next day. Waited 4 hrs no show. Called and complained set up new time waited 6hrs that day called several times they said they were on there way each time no show. called direct Tv set up new time same thing. By the time I was done I had $150 credit $20 off my bill each month for a year and all the movie channels for free for a year. well needless to say the next time they were supposed to come out same thing no show. So I went to Mediacom.
