the once bright glow on devries is fading. not sure wvu make a strong pitch to keep him given this late season swoon. you need depth in the big 12, and losing 2 of his 3 playmakers has exposed his roster.
He also should have signed a true post player in the portal.
He's in year 1 and lost 2 of his top 3 guys?

if true that is silly. Devries is in year one, he needs at least another year to see what he needs and get the guys he wants. Year one for most is just a figuring it out year. If his shine has faded already that is just dumb.

I just heard the news that Tucker has been declared out for the season. West Virginia after losing to TCU tonight is now 1-4 since taking the Cyclones down in Morgantown.

I realize that DeVries doesn't have a lot to gain monetarily by tanking the season in and then jumping ship to swim back to the state of Iowa. I don't think WVU would fire him unless they were to lose out. But man, I have to wonder if I'm reading the tea leaves right here. Fran being done in Iowa City after this season is pretty much set in stone with the news of Freeman shutting it down early and not on the bench supporting his team in their most recent game. Things just seem to be lining up right for DeVries to come home and take his dream job, which evidently isn't Creighton.
DeVries dream job is Creighton, not Iowa. When McDermott retires, DeVries will be their top choice. Way better job than Iowa.

I would bet he will take which ever job opens up first. If the EIU job comes open at that end of the season, he would take it, and then worry about the Creighton job down the road when it comes open.

Yeah this is the equivalent of us losing Jones and Gilbert/Lipsey then saying “TJ has been exposed!!”

To be fair this has been a narrative by some when Milan was out.

It doesn't take much for really dumb takes.

Met two WVU fans in the Florida resort pool who recognized the ISU hat. They have nothing but good things to say about DeVries and are thrilled with his first year success. Between the lines, I think the previous tuff thug physical style ball had its day. They wanted to know if the rumors were true that DeVries wanted the Iowa job? I said he was smarter than that. Their fans and the facility are not good. Last good coach was Tom Davis and they screwed him over.

Never assume Hawkeye fans (especially families where their roots are that deep) are smarter than even a tree stump.

This is ignorance. You don't think Fran was a good coach to take his team to the tournament 8 out of 10 years?

Yeah, they suck now and they haven't played much D since his first 2 NCAA tourney teams. I don't know how you can say Tom Davis was a good coach but Fran isn't when they are pretty much the exact same success minus Davis taking over a loaded squad that Raveling left him.

Gotta ask.. What makes a style of play "tough thug"?

Davis isn't exactly John Wooden, but statistically he produced better than Fran. Davis made the NCAA tournament 70% of the time when at Iowa compared to Fran's 55%. 9 NCAA berths in 13 years vs. 8 berths in 15 years.(Technically 7, because the COVID tournament was cancelled) He also made past the first weekend of the tournament 3 times(including his last year) compared to Fran's 0 times. Better conference record as well.

And that's not even factoring performance vs expectations/potential. Fran had multiple player of the year candidates and has very little to show for it.

At the end of the day is he a bad coach? No. But is he really a good coach either? In a world where half of the teams in the Big 10 get NCAA tournament invites every year, at minimum making the dance should be the bar for an acceptable vs unacceptable season, and Fran's about 50/50 with nothing better than the round of 32 to show for it.
I don't know if that translates to "good coach"
