Ha. Thats the way to skew stats to make your point
Abusing stats is also thinking 35 minutes into his junior season, including the KU minutes, is enough to say things like “can’t really shoot”

We don’t have a large enough sample on Watson, particularly a sample of him getting consistent minutes. I agree it’s likely shooting is not a strength, but even the staff may be surprised what some PT will do to a young guys confidence and game.

From the little we have seen, he looks like an asset type that we otherwise lack. We would benefit investing some development minutes in him. I mean, if he’s good enough that he’ll be called on against Illinois in the Sweet 16, he’s worth getting some minutes before that.

Dude, we’ve seen it for 3 years. He’s played in 69 games and averaged 10 mpg. We have a sample size. And with the defense he plays, do you honestly think if he could shoot at a consistent clip, he would be on the bench? Not a chance.

Why is this thread in General Discussion, not MBB?
Just curious.

Watson has been great tonight. IMO he should get minutes every game, but how many will depend just as much on how our offense is clicking on any night. Watson is limited on offense, but if the offense is clicking he can be Rodman. Be the energy/garbage guy on offense and defend/rebound.

That said, if he can hit spot up 3's at a 30% rate. He could take Heise's minutes.

Honestly I’m curious as to what separates him and Heise currently. If watson can hit an occasional 3….if he can the 2 are pretty similar with their effort and play

It shouldn’t be an either/or.

IMO we have 9 guys that can help us win, 8 right now with Milan out. Invest in getting them as developed and ready as possible for March. As long as they can defend, there’s minutes for all 8 imo

Agree. If Watson can hit the occasional 3, that makes his defender shade toward him vs. the paint.

Minutes could also be based on match-ups. Watson has been solid vs. KU and UCF. Not so much WVU. But he only got limited minutes against WVU. But our offense as a whole was struggling to score. So TJ might not have felt Demarion gave us enough options in half-court.

But he's one Cyclone I have already rooted for to succeed.

Don't disagree if he consistently plays well. And feel like it's not necessarily an either of with Heise vs. Watson for minutes. Watson can play the 4, so he can spell Jefferson. Or allow TJ to play Jefferson at the 5 if match-ups make sense.

Many guys make a jump between Sophomore and Junior seasons, and when getting consistent minutes. We haven’t seen either. People were making assumptions off what junior Watson was after less than 35 minutes of playing time over 15 games

Regardless, he doesn’t need to be a shooter for it to be suboptimal to not play him more minutes.

The combo of Jefferson and Watson against small teams would get us scary athletic. I like that option.

Them playing entirely different positions and how they have to defend is what separates them since they're on the court together.

I never said he shouldn’t play more minutes. I had said he’s wasn’t good enough on offense to warrant minutes if we have our top 8 healthy.

Now if he can play more consistently on offense than Heise, take his minutes. But he shouldn’t take minutes over any of the other 7 unless foul trouble happens.

I want both Heise and Watson to get minutes, even after Milan gets back. We need both to play all out on def.
Yeah not saying they both shouldn't just saying they do have different skill sets. If Watson keeps this up he will definitely have earned some minutes going forward. Cheering hard for Watson. Love when a kid sticks it out. The crowd certainly seemed to recognize his contribution tonight

no, I get what you are saying and agree about the skill sets. such a bonus for us to have two guys like that who can play tremendous def and not worry at all about being a focus on off / get shots.
