Defense Limiting Scoring Runs

Anecdotally this season one thing I've noticed is this team seems to do a great job of limiting their opponents from going on big runs. It always seems like we're keeping pace with our opponent or building a lead (or chipping into a lead in the few times we've been behind).

So I went through the ESPN play-by-play and tried to identify anytime we've let an opponent score 5 or more unanswered points. Below is the data:

  1. KennSt - 5 pts - 20-26 to 25-26
  2. KennSt - 5 pts - 29-41 to 34-41
  3. KennSt - 10 pts - 45-62 to 55-62
  4. OSU - None
  5. AlaSt - 6 pts - 8-12 to 14-12
  6. AlaSt - 8 pts - 23-29 to 31-29
  7. AlaSt - 7 pts - 42-54 to 49-54
  8. Gramb - 5 pts - 25-53 to 30-53
  9. Xav - 5 pts - 18-27 to 23-27
  10. Xav - 7 pts - 23-29 to 30-29
  11. Xav - 6 pts - 48-62 to 54-62
  12. Mem - 5 pts - 27-38 to 32-38
  13. Mem - 5 pts - 38-51 to 43-51
  14. APB - 6 pts - 38-68 to 44-68
  15. APB - 8 pts - 44-70 to 52-70
  16. Cre - 6 pts - 0-2 to 6-2
  17. Cre - 10 pts - 8-9 to 18-9
  18. Cre - 6 pts - 31-39 to 37-39
  19. FIowa - 5 pts - 10-11 to 15-11
  20. JackSt - 5 pts - 12-27 to 17-27
  21. JackSt - 7 pts - 22-37 to 29-37
  22. SEL - 5 pts - 7-14 to 12-14
  23. SEL - 5 pts - 18-31 to 23-31
  24. ChiSt - 6 pts - 15-30 to 21-30
  25. ChiSt - 11 pts - 33-64 to 44-64
Some observations:
  • We're averaging allowing 2 runs of 5 pts or more per game.
  • Biggest runs came against some of our weaker opponents.
  • Worst performance was allowing APB to go on a 14-2 run, but we were winning by 30 at the time.
  • Only 6 runs allowed the opponent to gain a lead. All of those were in the first half and 3 were early in the game.
This is awesome. One important note: an opposing team's scoring runs can't end without our team scoring. Our offense not being erratic is an important feature of not letting the opponent go on scoring runs.

I've also noticed Coach Otz hasn't been afraid to use a time out to refocus his team vs letting them play through it and struggle too long.

Yeah last night he took a couple time outs (I thought they were unnecessary because just get the damn game over with) to re-focus on defense even though we were up a decent amount.

Yeah on that 5-0 run against Jackson St just before halftime he called timeout and holy smokes did he let them have it. And then they gave up another couple easy buckets just before halftime. I thought he was gonna blow a gasket. Probably wasnt a fun locker room at half.

It's way too much work to figure it out, but I would guess a lot of those runs have come when Hunter is on the bench. He's still got a lot to learn as a freshman, but he seems to put better pressure on the initial ball-handler than Grill or Jackson (who are both decent defenders). We also run offense much better when he is in the game, which is obviously what stops "runs."

I feel like our guys wear teams out, especially when we have great ball movement on offense, as they have to work so hard on both ends.

This.

The conditioning of this team is impressive. They may have games where they have a talent deficit, but they won't have any with an energy deficit, and they can win games that way too.

Yep, and I don't think teams are going to be able to count on their home court beating us as effort and defense travels.

Did anyone else see how pissed he was right before half? The a few minutes extra in the lockerrom at half.

Fantastic.

As long as we are talking about time outs...

Has anyone noticed that Otz seems to allow and even encourage our guys to call that first half use it or lose it time out when they are scrambling for a ball on the floor? It seems like under a few of the past coaches they were content to just settle for the tie up rather than trading the timeout for a possession. I think it is smart considering so many times teams are calling that timeout in the last minute of the half so they don't just flat out lose it.

Maybe I'm just noticing it more because our guys are scrambling on the floor for loose balls more than we've had in decades.

As we know, he is all about habits. He doesn't want there to be any chance of developing bad habits in a blow out. This is the last tune up before playing a somewhat (understatement) better opponent.

It depends what your definition of talent is. This squad is extremely talented defensively.

I made a post about this right after the NIT. Good road teams can play defense and we can clearly play defense at an elite level. Offensively this team will be able to survive dry spells because teams will struggle to put up points on consecutive trips.

The ability to consistently execute compared to the other Big12 teams.

A lot of good defenses in this conference, most with much better offenses than we have displayed thus far.

This is the difference between being a fan and a coach. The coach wants us doing it right. It will pay off down the road. Don't have mental lapses and we don't have to worry about it. I love the focus that Otz brings on the sideline. There is a reason we don't see Conditt pout anymore in games. You either meet the standard or he will bring someone else in that will.

Looked situational to me for when it happens vs. conference teams.

ISU has had several stretches lately where they don't just go cold, they look bad.

We'll see. A lot of possible outcomes, which is great.

It has certainly been an adjustment to watch this year. Our good teams over the last ten years or so have been really really good offensively and that's kind of what we know. There are a lot of good defensive teams that make deep runs in the tournament and honestly, if you had to pick one of the two come march, give me the defense.

I have no preference, but the mistakes on defense the past few years just disgusting to watch as a fan. Young never learned how to play a ball screen.

For where we want to go, to do what Baylor has done the last few years, you need to be adequate at both. With Green and TJ, I think we will be. Just maybe not this season.

But maybe Hunter improves like freshman sometimes do mid-season, Gabe gets back to being a 30% streaky shooter, and Enaruna/Kunc give us just enough playmaking at the 4/5. If we can play like a top-60 offense, we'll be good
