David Irving to DT

My first thought is that we may be running more 3 linemen defensive sets this year (3-3-5 maybe) and they want him to get some work as an interior lineman for those situations.

One of the only negative parts of the Rhoads era has been the continued lack of development of the defensive line. Every other unit apart from WR has been at least serviceable during his tenure.

I'd add QB and WR to that list but hopefully that changes this year.

I think that this move signifies that Rodney Coe is legit starting 3 tech DT and is for depth more than a position switch. If we are planning to switch to a D that uses a 3 tech more we need depth. Coe and Aka are the only 3 tech guys and Irving could be another.

In the NFL right now it is a hot trend to line up 3 DE's in a 4 man front especially on passing downs then you stunt and twist and bring guys from different angles. With a DE the size of Irving maybe this is an option.

Again this is speculation on my part. But if this move isn't permanent then maybe they are moving him in drills to get him used to hand and footwork inside as well.

That just might be the only thing I've read thus far that makes any sense.

I cannot see how this is a positive at all otherwise.

So much for all those people on here saying how awesome he was and how dominant a player he was going to be... based off of nothing except his size. He was talked up on here like he was going to be the next Lawrence Taylor or something.

Others, including the coaching staff, basically said he was a project that was very raw and was going to need a lot of work. Well, I think the coaching staff was right.

I just think that his feet were too slow for him to get much pressure on the QB from the DE position. He never really did much last year outside of the INT for the TD. Hopefully he can get on the field at the DT spot, but I can't say that I've ever seen many 6'7" DT's before. None that were any good at least. It will be hard for him to get low enough pad level I'm guessing, but we shall see?

I hope we didn't have any injuries at DT to force this move? I was hoping that he would have made some strides at DE this year, but maybe not.

I'll take the un-CF-orthodox stanceof reserving judgment.

Yes, I see what you mean...

I'm going to say that this is mostly about having a ready to play 2-deep on the inside. I conclude that they aren't satisfied with the depth of the group in terms of guys who can strap it up and go right now. Jensen/Woods and ?/? backing them up was always the concern. Who could give Jensen and Woods a breather and not have a huge drop off? Coe is clearly emerging. I think they're struggling to find a guy who is ready to rotate in and be effective when the bullets are flying. He's a really big body (obviously) who can probably put on more weight, and he's been through some of the battles. It ain't rocket science, so I hope he just keeps his pads down and his motor hot.

Makes me feel a little better about the DE spots, and it clearly indicates to me that Scott is returning for probably all but UNI. Gives a guy like Lemke the chance to step up and takes some snaps. I'll reserve judgment and watch for the performance of the whole line.

Hey, what can I say? I hope I'm dead wrong. I would love nothing more than to come on here and admit I was wrong.

I hope Irving is staying at DE, and I hope he's improved a ton since last year. We need it. I would love nothing more than to be proven wrong. But he was not very effective last year, that is a fact.

Amazes me how the unit that has outperformed expectations every year of the CPR era and some folks assume the worst. I would assume the defensive coaches know what they are doing - they have given me no reason not to trust them.

My guess would be passing downs he may slide to DT. That way we have 3 pass rushers instead of 2.

They must like what they have in Lemke, Meyers, and Kron. Maybe they had six DEs ready, and only four DTs, and wanted five of each. I don't know. He will have quite a bit of practice time before our first FBS game, so I suppose it's not too late to move.

I hate to say it but I just don't think things were working out for him at DE. For supposedly having some explosiveness he certainly had problems getting around opposing tackles. Perhaps moving inside simplifies some technique things? Nonetheless I hope he uses this as a redshirt year to develop.

As soon as I say I hope he RS then CW tweets he has already has a sack or two in practice at DT. Maybe the coaches know what they are doing after all (tic)!

The Giants used to run or still do their "NASCAR" package where they essentially lined up 4 DE's across the line and let them go crazy. The guy is huge and could be a problem for interior linemen. I interpret this as a case where they are trying to get all of the best d-linemen on the field at the same time. I could be wrong but I like the idea of the athleticism the DT's will have. Also, I think this speaks to Willie Scott not missing much, if any, time.

He said he's already gotten more sacks from the three tech in camp than he has previous years at DE. There was a pretty successful DT in the NFL who was like 6'7" 336(probably was Irving's size in college)... So while it's not classic height for the middle it's been done...
