Darrell Bowie stabbed in Romania

I was listening to KCCI over my shoulder.

The local news dominates when I spent time at home on the farm.

They quoted Darrell's condition as, "Stable but unpredictable."

I hope he is okay. :(

If you are following what is going on in central and eastern Europe it is not that much of a jump considering the statement of "no prior conflict" and others jumping in.

Why not speculate that they are foreigners in a romanian village most likely living a lifestyle that exceeds most others in the village, getting attention from women, making romanian bling...

Thats the reason I start fights - foreigners - regardless of color. o_O

I found some coverage in Romanian of the incident from a site called Libertatea ("Freedom") and used the translation option on Chrome. Obviously, these translations aren't perfect - note the word "bastards" in the headline. But this claims that they have identified the key suspect and that the incident DID seem to start due to the players' race. I'm pasting the translated article below:

EXCLUSIVE FOTO | How does the club where the two American basketball bastards are stabbed?
CORRESPONDENCE FROM BRĂILA. The team sent specially by Freedom to Braila to report on the case of stabbed basketball players on Saturday night to Sunday at the Music Pub site sent us video and photo footage at the club where the incident happened in the hospital American athletes.
Darrell Bowie and Joseph McClain, legalized at ACS Cuza Sport Braila, were attacked with knives while on the terrace. The attack took place, although the owners of "Music Pub" club in Braila ensure their customers, through leaflets, that they are safe. Freedom, however, learned that the place had no contract for three years with BGS Brăila security company.
The attacker would be Daniel Gabriel Husein, an interlop known as "Dasaev". After being searched by the authorities, the interlop came Monday morning to the police in the company of her own lawyer. Most likely, it will be retained. He will plead innocent.

Asked whether, in his opinion, Dasaev is guilty of this attack, the head of the club Cuza Sport Braila said : "All the athletes who were present sent me the picture of this man. I can not say now that he is innocent or guilty, but I think there are too many coincidences in view of his past and everything that happened on the spot. '

Mircea Totolici also says there are club images that will be made public and show that players have not retaliated before starting this "out of the blue" conflict. Basketball player Joseph McClain claims that the beating started racially, with the interlop taking the color of the Americans.

Following the incident, the two basketball players were transported to the hospital. Bowie, 24, was transferred to Floreasca Hospital in Bucharest and is currently in good health . He suffered multiple injuries, including the perforated lung after the blows received during the attack. McClain, 25, is still hospitalized at a hospital in Braila, but doctors claim he's out of any danger. Both athletes had originally requested to be transferred to the US, but they changed their minds after seeing how they are treated by Romanian doctors.

NOTES: I guess "interlop" here can't be translated but I'm guessing it's something along the lines of "perpetrator." Also, other later reports dispute the report of a perforated lung. I didn't add any color emphasis above; that's just how it pasted.

Speaking of former ISU athletes who were victims of violence, KCRG reported that DB is improving and that doctors are optimistic about both players' recoveries. Here is a blurb from the article:

A former Iowa State basketball player attacked over the weekend in Romania is awake and able to communicate according to the basketball club that he currently plays for in Romania.

C'mon, DB! We're pulling for you.

Correct!
The original poster was probably a little too firm in expressing his/her opinion. But it was the first thing I thought of when I read the story. I would still bet they are proven correct. Not much of a jump to a conclusion. Racism and the scapegoating of groups is on the rise, not just in Eastern Europe but in many places globally, some much closer to home.

I found this update on Darrell Bowie and his teammate on a Romanian website (prosport.ro) and used the translation feature on Chrome (the translation is a bit rough). Sounds like they're both improving and speaking and it appears that DB was due to get out of critical care yesterday. There is some talk of whether they will immediately return to the USA - their first and natural sentiments - or whether they will stay to try to play again. Here is the copied-and-pasted machine translation of the article:

EXCLUSIVE New details for the two basketball players stabbed in Braila! Their health is improving. Bowie spoke for the first time with his family after the incident: "They were a little agitated over there." The Mayor's reaction to Braila

Three days have passed since the two US basketball bass players, Joseph McClain and Darrell Bowie, legalized at the club ACS Cuza Sport Braila, were stabbed on a city terrace, an event that "shook" the world of Romanian sports.

Fortunately, their health is getting better and better, informs ProSport manager of the club, Mircea Totolici: "With Braila I talked, I was next to him. He has moved from intensive therapy to the salon, stays in a stand alone and his health is getting better. The one in Bucharest is about to take him out of intensive care today or tomorrow and take him to the salon.

Last night I brought a psychologist to the team, we were all at the hospital, we talked. We're trying to get them out of this state, our team is very young. The trainings are stopped, they do not think about basketball, they are thinking for what has happened
, "Totolici said.

The manager of the Braila club denies the option that the two would have asked to be transferred to a spiral from America: "I think not. If they were asking, I would have known. Perhaps that night when it happened, I do not deny it would have said 'I want home,' but now, when everyone is conscious, I have not heard from any of the players this thing.

That individual was detained and is due today to appear before the tribunal for a proposal for preventive arrest , " Mircea Totolici pointed out.

Bowie spoke to the family for the first time after the incident

ProSport also spoke with Andrei Ciubotariu, official ACS club Cuza Sport Braila, sent to Bucharest for the oversight of basketball player Darrell Bowie (25). Mircea Totolici revealed yesterday, 17 September, exclusively to ProSport that he was transferred to a hospital in the capital because he suffered complications in the large intestine. He was subjected to an operation in the abdomen area and yesterday communicated with his family for the first time after the incident.

"It's okay, he says, I talked to him last night yesterday afternoon and told me that his progress is visible, from day to day he sees himself increasingly active. He's positive, he's not scared, he has a very good thinking about what happened.

Yesterday he first spoke with his family when he arrived in Bucharest because he was not allowed to go to intensive therapy and had no contact with his family. He talked to them, they were a little shaky, but it's perfectly normal. As he goes to America, he will most likely leave. Now he is interested in playing still, we can not give him a prognosis at this point, neither do us nor the doctors, because the recovery will take a bit, the incision being quite large in the sea after the operation and it was quite enough cut the abdomen to invade where he was stabbed, and the recovery will be as server
, " said Andrei Ciubotariu for ProSport.

The Bradley club official approximates the recovery time of Darrell Bowie (25) at about a month or two, and tomorrow he will begin to eat, being fed up with infusions so far: "He will most likely do sports. Let's see, depending on his recovery time, what probably will not be short, that is, a month or two, probably going home. We are currently interested in seeing it well and being out of any danger.

Today he moves him from intensive care to the surgery department and I do not know anything about discharge. He tomorrow will probably start to eat, he has not eaten until now. It was only fed through infusions, and tomorrow it will start to eat some light, that is yogurts or soups. From there, a test phase begins on it, how the large intestine reacts, because that's why it was not allowed to eat. There he was stung
, " added Ciubotariu.

ProSport also contacted the Mayor of Braila, Marian Dragomir, who stressed that the city hall will continue to fund the basketball club, and such incidents do not characterize Braila City:

"The City Hall of Braila County has financially supported the club Cuza Sport in the past years and will support it in the future. Events of this type do not characterize Brăila, but sometimes there are people who are totally inappropriate for a civilized city, as is the case in other cities, including the United States of America , "Dragomir told ProSport.

I should also note that I found a short blurb on the accused that he is a known gangster / underworld figure who had just been repatriated from Spain after 4 years in jail for pimping and other such activities. Sounds like quite the piece of work.

The fund-raising campaign on gofundme.com to help Darrell Bowie's family has raised $1200. They would like to get his parents to Romania and then have some funds to help with his rehab since it probably will be in the USA and will be expensive. Their stated fundraising goal is $20k.

Here's a link if anyone wants to kick in: https://www.gofundme.com/help-darrell-bowies-recovery

In, thanks for posting. Wonder if this deserves its own thread.

I have tried to find some updates on Darrell but haven't found much. But I see that DB was active again on Twitter on Friday and I'll post those tweets, including a statement from him.
