Cytown Update

The hotel alone is going to do just fine as Ames could use another option. Especially with the location it will be sold out for any big events in Ames. During the school year it's a convenient option for anyone visiting a student and when school is out probably be a prime location for conventions.

Football, basketball, and any other big events like concerts and such are going to bring in some big business even if they are for short periods of time. The goal will be getting some businesses in the area to carry some of the day to day traffic to the area when there is not something big going on and also booking events at Hilton, CY, Jack Trice, etc that will feed into demand for anything that will be going into CyTown. Basically need a wide variety of businesses and events that will all mutually benefit each other to stay viable year round.
The hotel would also be used by companies during engineering career fair weeks. I work for a company that goes to these every year to recruit and that hotel will be packed during those weeks in the fall and spring.

I completely agree but to be fair that's kind of how it was initially presented. The current plans also look a lot different than what JP originally presented too. People need to get over that thoguh because it's been very clear for a few years now that Cytown was probably going to have 1 or 2 food/bar establishments and that's it.
I went back and found the original renderings (when it was just an idea being explored), and I'm honestly surprised at how much is similar. Obviously the orientation has changed, and they changed up the modified parking, but a lot of the concept is the same.

Also found the original thread talking about the project. I truly wasn't looking for your posts, but it looks like you weren't a fan of the project at any point, even from an initial rumor.

I was excited at first but the whole project seems to have lost some momentum. The hotel is a grand slam, that's definitely needed and will be a huge success but I have a feeling the main CyTown area is going to end up being really underwhelming. Those retail spaces will end up being revolving doors and today's version is not what JP sold Iowa State fans on. At the end of the day I get it, Iowa State has very little tied up on the whole deal so all the financial pressure is on the developer.

The last time we stopped at Cy's Locker Room we were incredibly disappointed with their generic selection. Scheels sucks too. Iowa State's retro logo's are awesome yet these places just keep slapping out generic Nike shirts that lack any sort of character.
The college team clothing industry is extremely oversaturated right now. Companies are just slapping logos on willy nilly and hoping it appeals to someone. But apparently people are buying.

I’m not sure if you’re thinking the F&B anchor, located next to McFarland and along Jack Trice Way will be the only restaurant/bar but all of the buildings (other than McFarland will most likely have a F&B tenant a long with retail & office so there should be F&B options through the entire area.
Based on those sizes I would guess Cy's Locker Room takes over at least half of one building, possibly all of one building if they move their whole storage site currently next door on Duff.

First of all, NOTHING ever ends up being exactly like the first concept rendering. Christ, look at every project ever completed at ISU, I dont believe I have ever seen a single one that looks exactly like the initial concept.

Second, this is pretty damn close to what was proposed, as far as content.

And It was NEVER expected to be done in a couple years. I specifically remember Pollard saying this was going to take 10+ years from initial concept to final completion at least, in interviews.

I really dont know what some of you Debbie downers expected.

Maybe its more about your unrealistic expectations than actually about what is being done with CyTown.

Jesus, sorry Jamie!

Here's the thing, I don't have any unrealistic expectations. I cautioned people from the get go that this wasn't going to look anything like a P&L type set up.

@BillBrasky4Cy be careful 1speedy will get really mad and feelings hurt if you say anything negative about JP or her husband Rick Sanders project!!

Show me the quote, article, or interview where Pollard said this would take ten years? I don't remember ever hearing that unless he had a crystal ball that COVID was going to happen and delay the project a couple of years. The planning and initial announcement was made in September of 2019 to donors in Cy Stephens. Development phases started in 2022, but COVID delayed the feasibility study.

And also, when did the label arrive that Ames citizens, Cyclone fans, and University stakeholders can't express concerns about the viability of the project? Why is a concern labeled as a debbie downer? I am sure Jamie, Rick Sanders, and President Wintersteen have had many discussions with Goldenrod. They, along with the Goldenrod, will do everything in their power to make the space occupied and busy throughout the year, I am sure. As many of you said, the liability is on Goldenrod at least for the next 30 years.

Separately, the city of Ames is also trying to launch a downtown convention center/hotel and parking garage. Hint: It's also been delayed. Should Ames tax payers and visitors just sit back and not ask questions about why a space along Lincoln Way filled with broken concrete has had no movement? Iowa State and the City of Ames have over $400 million of proposed projects, and some of us are trying to figure out how it all will survive. Seems like reasonable questions to me...

1spedy2 doesn't like message boards where fans can share their own opinions!!

I think we all understand something like this takes time. We're also getting close to the time where it's prime construction season and people will start asking more about whats happening with CyTown. Some fencing is good if it means stuff will start rising out of the ground soon.
