Cytown Update

One of the weirdest things on this board and twitter is the amount of people seemingly cheering against this project
The thing I worry about is the ROI...Ames is a small college town, especially when students are gone during the summer. I don't think students are going to flock to CyTown over Campustown.

Maybe not. It's still commercial land in the center of town with two high traffic roads right there. In terms of a place for new development I doubt there are many better places in Ames.

I don't disagree with the location but there have been companies that have tried to run stores in Ames and they've flopped because there just isn't a high enough demand to keep it going.

I love Ames in the summer (I am an Ames resident) but it is a ghost town lol.

Probably some thoughts like this.

In reality, there are more parking spots than we had before this development.
Thr one argument is that tailgating might be impacted. The lots will certainly more spread out even if there are more spots so it won't necessarily have the same feel.

But to act like baby's about a parking lot is weird though.

What is funny is some of the people I know that complain the most about it.

Dont have parking and many not even season tickets.
or
Spot moved all of about 35 feet.
or
Actually have better parking than before, because of the RV Lot moving.
or
Have better tailgating spot due to moving out by Hilton.

Etc.

Most have little to nothing to actually complain about.

But they all act like the sky is falling. Is everything going to be the same, no. Is everything going to be better, no. But sometimes change is needed, sometimes change is hard. You have to look at the positives instead of just focusing on the negatives. There are really only a few negatives with this entire project, with a ton of positives. The amount of potential with this is huge, but we wont know how it all works out for a while yet.

That being said, this was always going to be a process with many phases and steps, it was never going to be complete in a couple years.

I'm pretty confident that there's a lot of misinformed people out there who are mad about this project because they were convinced it would be a literal copy of KC Live in the Power and Light District in KC with nothing but bars and restaurants, and then when the renderings came out, they thought they were lied to the whole time and it was all Pollards fault.

Then I’m guessing you haven’t spent any summer weekends in Ames the past five or so years. I’m alway shocked at the number of people that treat Ames like it’s some backwater hillbilly bumpkin town when school isn’t in session.

If the event calendar has something every week sure... but if it's once every 4 weeks that's prob not going to get the job done.

April 7 - state jazz championships (60 high school bands)
April 11 - stadium concert (60,000+)
April 19-21 - State FFA

May 14-16 - ISU graduation ceremonies
May 21-23 - Special Olympics
May 26-30 - Odyssey of the Mind

ISU orientation takes up a big chunk of June

July 10-12 - Iowa Games
July 17 - stadium concert

Well considering I live here, I have. And I'm not saying it's some random podunk town, but the population drops dramatically once the spring semester ends and there are just less people in town.

Going back to CyTown, my concern is the ROI. There's a lot of money going into the project and other than football and maybe basketball weekends, it's hard for me to see the place being packed on a random evening in June.
