Cytown Update

People were saying the same thing when they were talking about enclosing the South end zone. Wait until the crowd size shows we need it and then do it. Funny how that worked out, not only does the stadium look, sound and feel better, it bought in another money steam.

You build now and the demand will be there.
True - but I think ISU was fortunate the south end enclosure also coincided when Campbell turned the program around. I'm not sure if the ticket demand would be as high as it is now if the program didn't have the success it did

It does if you can create a structure that can not only serve as a "press box" but also a revenue generator, e.g., more suites, conference/event/meeting space, other premium office, training, tutoring, etc. space for other sports, etc. So many schools have these massive structures that not only serve as a pressbox on game, but are there for many other logical and lucrative reasons. And oh yeah, a big ass structure would look a hell of a lot better than our dinky little G5 press box. Having an intimidating home venue is important to the football program. It's the same reason it was a mistake putting in a new scoreboard on the south side and not making it the full width to match the video board on the north side. Those stupid dorky ass cheesy as hell looking I-State and Big 12 logo "coverings" look so damn bad and embarrassing. Having 2 giant video boards facing each other would have been a very unique and intimidating addition to Trice that not many stadiums have. Such a missed opportunity, and yes it was absolute worth the money to do it.
Lots to agree with here, but we are talking about a department that has many funding needs.

Either way you have to have success on the field to get people to purchase tickets. It will be interesting to see the demand for football tickets this spring when its time to sign up again. The economy sucks for most people, the prices keep going up each year and with the change of coaches, it could not have happened at a worse time for ISU.

What would have been an easy decision to renew season tickets, will all we had coming back, has changed and many will have to rethink that decision on renewing or not. I was on the fence about renewing for next season before Campbell left, if you told me today, that I must choose, I would let our four tickets go and move to the 3 game pass for next season.

Do it!

I was a student in the 70s and 80s and then moved away. When we retired four years ago, we moved back to Ames and got season tickets. When we walked in to Hilton for the first game I said to my wife, “It’s like stepping back in time!”
Hey...they got new courts and lower bleachers due to the flooding in 1993 and 2010.

I'm honestly confused, lol.

We have posters saying there isn't demand for suites/box seats and other posters saying there is a waiting list for the Jack Trice club suites.

Both things can be true.

Suites are a lot more expensive and on a tier well beyond the jack trice club, and require a longer-term commitment.

You wouldn’t have to increase the number of suites. You could move the existing suites to a “press box” and then convert the current suite space into more Jack Trice club style seating. Still not something that would happen in the current environment but it would be one option to fill some of the existing demand for premium seating. Assuming there is still a waiting list for Jack Trice club seats.

If you were to win the $1.5b lottery next Monday and walked into Jamie Pollard's office on Tuesday telling him you were going to give $100m for a new press tower, I guarantee he would convince you to donate that in a different direction. Hilton concourse renovation? Maybe, but suite space is far down the list of priorities. I'm not sure if you've heard, but our athletic department is not in a position to drop 9 figures on aesthetics.

On top of that, Jack Trice has 45 private suites. In comparison, Kinnick currently 46 suites, Kansas will have a total of 42 after their renovation, Nebraska has 44, Kansas State has 40, and Minnesota has 39, so we are very much on par with our competition geographically as far as number of private suites go.

The unsold popcorn is still used today! Vintage snack.

Pretty sure it you are making $100 million dollar donation, you get to decide where the money goes, no matter what the AD wants or needs. If the AD is not willing to do exactly what you want, then they are not getting the money.

No one is saying the press box should be #1 on the want list, and we cannot afford it even if it was. I am just saying it should have been done years ago, and now, it will never be done.

I mean in the grand scheme I would like to think he would take it and do it, but I agree he would probably try to talk you into better use for Iowa State.

I mean, concept art is literally designed with the sole purpose of attracting interest in a project without regard for practicality or budgetary constraints. Have you seen the original concept art for Hilton Coliseum? The Ribcage of Doom?

As I recall, this design was actually distributed for construction bids but came in over budget. Contractors were afraid of the cable roof. So they totally redesigned it to the present form with a conventional roof. Sometimes things happen for good reasons!

The idea that an AD would spend something on the order of $40 million to replace a press box because some fans feel it doesn't look big time enough, is preposterous on its face and I don't know why we keep talking about it. When athletics listed their priorities for improvements in a document 10 years or so ago there was a lot of stuff on it. Press box wasn't.
And it would cost like $100 million probably. Stuff is crazy expensive these days and then you add that it's a big floating box in the sky.

Also I'm pretty sure we're the only ones who care that much about what our press box looks like. You never see it on tv and fans aren't going to be any more or less intimidated by a press box and bigger jumbotrons lol.

I'm all for stadium improvements, it's my favorite thing but I don't see the press box changing any time soon.

I'd rather update the look of Jacobson or reconfigure the whole North end zone. But that's not happening any time soon either.

This is a pro league now, can we use public moneys for stadium upgrades now? Lol

Press boxes are built for members of print media. Print media is dead. And while enhanced suite seating would be welcome, there doesn't seem to be much of a need there. ISU athletics is no longer in a "build it and they will come" mode. Thank God we got as much work done for the program when we did, before the missile crisis.

Agree how many people actually post on this website, Yeah I'm just watching at home. The affordability factor is still a driving force for many ISU fans.

Yes, if anything needs to be funded it is the hilton renovations. That is supposed to add things like suites, offices, and expand the concessions.

Is there even a demand for more luxury seating and suites at JTS? It's easy to say we need to add suites as a money generator, but it also feels like creating a supply for something that isn't in demand.
Suites and all that stuff are really fun as long as someone else is footing the bill and comping you a pair a tkts to a game. I really don't know anyone that has a suite personally but I'm LOL poor.
