Cyhawk postgame thread

I think they will be 6-5 going into the game against Nebraska. Same wins you listed plus Wisconsin. I don't think Fickell knows how to handle Ferentzball.

Indiana has historically struggled with the same problem, but its difficult to see Iowa beating them with their putrid offense.

Am I the only one who thought Iowa looked better than they expected? I think their defense might be the best defense we face this year. I think they will win games. Last year they were 8-5, 6-3 in conference. I could see a similar result. And, although their QB hasn't looked great, I think he's more talented than what they have had recently and expect him to improve. With their rushing game they only need him to occasionally make teams pay when they overplay the run. They will really struggle, though, when they get behind and have to pass. We saw what happened on that last drive when ISU didn't have to honor the run.

I look at it this way, I think ISU has top 25 team this year, and we beat them at home by 3.

Watching the replay. When Hawks were driving the ball with 8 minutes left in the game, Hunter Sowell # 48 dropped back in coverage on Gill and forced Gronoowski to throw the ball high on 3rd and 7. That was a key play that kept the score 13-13.

It's amazing Heacock let a true freshman take the field in such a crucial spot.

Edit: Turned out to be Ta'Shawn James #19. I need to get my eyes rechecked!

Yeah, but everything goes out the window in this game. Our 4-8 team from 22 beat them in Kinnick. It’s just such a crap shoot anymore and really has been for the past damn near 30 years. They might not be bad at all, or they might be bad. The score is really no indicator of how the season plays out.

Rivalry games are weird. Michigan was a mediocre football team last season and beat the National Champions in Columbus.

Iowa isn’t horrible. They’re very solid in some areas, offensively is not one of those areas. Unless something changes (it won’t) they are going to be one of the worst P5 offenses again.

Now that they lost their superbowl, their hearts just won't be in it.

quote of the week.
Ferentz was asked about losing 10 straight games to ranked opponents:
"Yeah, thanks for reminding me. I wasn't aware of that, actually. So, I mean, we're three points short today; that's about all I can say.”

Listening to an Iowa postgame show - Iowa has not won as a road underdog since Wisconsin 2015.

On this crucial play, all five of the Iowa lineman had the opportunity to turn and watch their QB get taken to the ground. Rare that all 5 get to enjoy the show. Usually they would be busy doing something.

btw, we had a QB spy called. Worked beautifully.

We rushed two from our left side, the MLB set up and then dropped back to spy, the outside backers were also spying, you can see the squawk QB wanted to step up, but then our MLB started coming down hill at him, allowing our DE on the left to get to the QB. Great defensive play call. From the wider angle you can see we had 5 DBs and all the squawk WR were in front of them. So it they completed the pass, they were not getting much for a gain.

I walked over there. They were as full as I’ve ever seen them for any game ever. You could barely stand and find a spot to see at the top. I don’t know many JCCs they sold this year, they probably “over sell” that area, but every single one had to have shown up for that game. It was nuts.
Daughter is a student and student section was full by the time her group was able to get in the stadium so they ended up sitting (standing) on the hillside.

It's amazing Heacock let a true freshman take the field in such a crucial spot.

2 Patton - deep, behind WR #5 (Gill)
4 Cooper - near side on WR #6
7 Bell - far side on WR #2
19 James - in front of WR #5 (Gill)
47 Ebel - on the TE #81

Sowell hasn't played (or even dressed) this year.

I don't think Hunter Sowell was in on that play (wasn't listed on the participation report). Ebel, McLaughlin (near the line of scrimmage), and Ta'Shawn James were the defenders in coverage where Gronowski was looking to throw.

So amazing that he’s not on the participation report.

Freshman walkon. You might want to check that number again?

Sons friends who are freshmen got in line a little after midnight. They were around the 3-4 row. We took pity on them when they asked our son if he could bring them food so we made some breakfast burritos and threw some cinnamon rolls in for them

Did the math on this it doesn't work, Bruce has been gone longer than Campbell alive. But it is a nice thought.
Even if you assume we have Bruce until his ultimate (second) retirement from football (2004), Campbell has just finished his first year on a staff as a GA at Bowling Green. I don't think he was ready to take over Iowa State as head coach.
