Cy-Hawk face-off with Jon Miller

"Nothing to gain" Jeez Jon, When the rest of your non-con is 2 MAC teams and a FCS team?

I'd think the chance to beat a BSC conference team that went to bowl games 2 of last three years might be something to gain. Maybe the chance to beat to team that is gaining national attention may be worth something.

Oh yeah, there is also the opportunity to gain bragging rights and keep upper hand on in-state recruiting. If all that add up to "Nothing" it's no wonder the Hawks can't get it up for this game.

So.....this game means so much to you that you hate this week and the prospect of loosing, yet you have "nothing to gain".

Guess what Jon. The 15 game streak ended a looooooooooong time ago and it has been pretty even since then. It is no longer Iowa's "God given right" to beat ISU and it is hardly a shock when it happens. You need to rip a few years off your office calendar.

Stay delusional my friend.

That's really the issue. Most of their fanbase has this expectation that they should win this game every year, when in reality it is a toss up and has been for a long time. It's just that it takes many many years to change that expectation, and most people haven't done it yet. A few more ISU wins and this game won't be played anymore is my guess. Iowa fans just won't stand for it.

I really think at this point ISU gets very little from playing the game as well. I think it is great for the fans, and games like this are why college football is so much fun so I think it should still be played. But in reality I don't think either school gets much more than what they would vs playing another BCS team. ISU is going to have a top 10 schedule every year even without Iowa, so I don't really see how it helps us much. It's a cool matchup though, I hope they keep it going.

This post is 100% in line with my thinking.

The ISU game isn't usually near the top of the list on games I'd most like to see Iowa win but they're always on the top of the list of games I don't want Iowa to lose, if that makes any sense. I have a feeling many ISU fans probably feel the same way. This is a big "losing feels worse than winning feels good" game.

For example, if i were to ask "which team would you rather beat: Iowa or Oklahoma" many would choose OU and reasonably so. But if I were to ask, "which team would you least like to lose to: Iowa or Oklahoma" I think there would be more people choosing Iowa and rightfully so.

A rational opinion from a hawk about this series. Nice work.

No **** captain obvious! We are instate rivals. If iowa loses to ISU they have to deal with **** talking and bragging from ISU fans all year long cuz we all have friends that are fans of the other school. If iowa loses to ohio state, big deal cuz they are better and you dont have to listen thier fans all year long. I love when ISU beats iowa cuz i have bragging rights and can talk **** to all the iowa fans i know which includes my family and my best friends. If you cant handle a rivalry then gtfo

I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure Jon said "least for him to gain" meaning he is under much more scrutiny than any chance for personal gain or reward... which can be true when you are an admitted homer of a team. Any slip of the tongue for Jon and its on this board before he takes his next breath.

umm...relax?

People need to understand. EVERY GAME MATTERS. Unless you are playing a ranked team, losing to anyone hurts no matter who they are. Iowa needs to get over themselves. If they don't like it, suit up and win, otherwise, stop crying.

My office is full of hawk fans. My boss is an ISU alum but still a Hawk fan. When he was hired on a few years ago it was right before the CyHawk game. He told us he grew up right outside of Iowa City but went to ISU. He told us he would wait until Friday to let us know which team he was a fan of. I knew right away he was a Hawk fan.

Luckily there are a few Loyal Sons (and daughters) in the office or I'd probably lose it.

Personally I love watching the game but a lot of the smack talk around the office gets a bit old. The Hawk fans are usually pretty condescending. I guess I am not enough of an a-hole because I didn't rub it in nearly enough last year. It's been much quieter around here so far this year.

Most of the hawk fans I've worked with are actually big enough fans to talk football (and occassionally hoops) with year-round and do it fairly intelligently. Some good-natured smack during rivalry week from them doesn't really bother me. I've gotten to the point that I'm much more annoyed with the fair-weather/kind-of-sort-of Clone fans that feel compelled to rag on "didn't actually go there" Iowa fans all week while clearly not having a good handle on their own team this year. Makes me mildly embarassed when these types feel the need to spout off.

Yeah, if the hakws in my office could talk football inteligently it would be a different story. They can't. Most of them root for the hawks because their dad did or because they like to root for who they think it going to win more often.

My boss isn't actually too bad. He will tell a few lame jokes but the smack doesn't go too far. He will talk sports but he doesn't know the details that well for either team. He's more of a basketball guy.

Bugs the heck out of me that I see a Facebook "Like" from my Aunt (uncle's wife) that shows Aunt Tilly likes the University of Iowa Alumni Association message 'Beat State'. Consider that her husband and three of his brothers are farmers, and several of their sons and daughters (my cousins numbering about 7-8) ALL went to Iowa State. One cousin played volleyball and was all-conference for Iowa State. My father went to Iowa State as did myself and my brother. All told we have at least a dozen ISU alumni in the family and NOT ONE person who has attended Iowa. As far as I know, her son (my cousin) from Dubuque who graduated from Wartburg is a huge Hawk fan and that's her connection. It was the wife's Facebook page, so I resisted the urge to say "Just who in our extended family is an Iowa Alum?" I just.... don't... get it.

The only ones that really get my goat are the ISU students/alums that continue to be hawk fans first. I cut the 90's era alums a little slack because it seems like there was barely a football program to support, but for at least the last decade the program has at least been respectable. Support your school!

Growing up in Minnesota, I don't really get the two in-state schools non-alum fan culture, so I don't really judge. If your aunt herself is a free agent (didn't go to either school), I can't really begrudge her cheering for who she probably grew up cheering (assuming of course she's not being obnoxious about it.)
