Just got back from meet and read through comments. It was obvious Brands wanted to start something as he came over jawing at the coaches. It’s pathetic the things they do and say to the officials and coaches during the meet. Truly scum of the earth and have been their whole lives. Honestly reflects poorly on Gable as he fostered their lunacy and handed them the reigns.
Stalling calls were bull the whole meet. The first stalling call at heavyweight on our guy was when he was using a whizzer to defend a shot. Iowa fans are so stupid and have no idea what stalling really is, and their coaches bully the refs. Really, really dumb people.
Cyclones wrestled really tough, top to bottom. Devine took all the shots in regulation, really just got over aggressive in OT and it was capitalized on.

I wrote this!

Good write up. Could have done without the “17th straight” in the title. It is the truth so understand.
We did wrestle well overall.
125 Kysen beat a back up soundly, was hoping for major but solid win. Reality is if Lee goes it’s minimum 8 point swing in dual score.
133 Ramozan was right there. Would liked to have seen a little more offense but great match plan.
141 I was hoping Redding would keep it a little closer but he’s tough.
149 was disappointing, if Parker wants to go at 149 and expects to be an All American he shouldn’t be losing to Murin. Parker wins that match who knows how the meet turns out. That match was big.
157 David solid win. Young is tough and a great scrambler.
165 is discouraging mainly because the weight hasn’t been close to having a ranked wrestler the last 5+ years.
Devine at 174 was ok except for the gas tank part. I’m not sure Kemerer beats Devine worse than a decision.
184 Marcus good win. Solid decision.
197 Yonger match of the night! Tremendous
HWT Got screwed by referee with the disqualification outcome. Should have been a major was never going to be close.
Again overall liked what I saw. Keep Improving we can be a top 10 team JMO.

2 things:

1) zero reason Brands son should have been brought into this. That poster should feel like a complete Jack @$$ for doing so

2) top Hawkeye closet racism remarks from last night included: our Cuban looks like a caveman. When you need a translator you shouldn’t even be allowed in college. David should go play with his other “brothers” at PSU.

Grades:

125- A: Great match from Kysen, and really dominated Ybarra. I would like to point out that Ybarra was 16th overall on Flo's 2020 big board and Kysen was 94th. Pretty stunning how the Cyclone staff has been able to develop Kysen into a nationally ranked kid by his redshirt freshman year, and Ybarra has not developed at all under the Brands. Kysen's got a lot of potential.

133- B: Impressive to keep it to a decision against Desanto, but I still want to see offense from Ramazan. He's got really good defense and is good at Russian ties, but he needs to find a go to shot he can at least attempt with 30 seconds left in the match if you're down by 2. No difference in losing by 4 vs 2, might as well take a shot.

141- B: Liked the effort from Redding and getting that takedown on Eierman should be good for his confidence. Will be interesting to see if Ian goes down to 141 if he tries to go down to 133 or if that cut would be too big.

149- C: Losing to the #9 ranked kid by 1 point isn't a bad loss, but Ian just couldn't get any of his offense going at 149. While he looked bulked up, he still looked small compared to Murin. I'm not ready to write off Ian at 149, but at the end of the year I think his best shot at AA is at 141 and that also is the best lineup for our team with Degen at 149. It will work itself out.

157- B-: David was solid, and dominated an AA, but if he wants to take that next step to a truly elite, top PFP wrestler in college, he needs to be majoring these borderline AA wrestlers. Solid match from David, and KY did stall the entire match, but I think he would even say he didn't wrestle his best.

165- B: Solid effort from Stotts and was a bonus to only get majored by Marinelli. The Bull is a beast and no shame in this loss.

174- C: Joel needs to beat Brands, plain and simple. Similar to 133, Devine needs to find some go-to shots and get some more action going during regulation. At the end of the day, I think this will be a good learning match for him and he will be a solid 174 for us this year.

184- B-: Similar to David, Marcus should've majored Wilson. He's a much more talented wrestler than Wilson but waited until the 3rd period to open up his offense. He could've had a takedown in the first pretty easy if he would just open it up. Still a solid match and win, just waiting for Marcus to open it up and take that next step to being a true AA contender at 184.

197- A+: Great, smart match from Yonger. I need a gif of Dresser's smile from when getting asked about Yonger preseason, because I think he was on to something. Still not great at mat wrestling, but he will be able to beat most wrestlers in the country by keeping the match in neutral. I think he has the most room to grow this year too, which is pretty exciting considering he just beat the #3 ranked kid. Yonger will still lose matches he probably shouldn't, but he will be a scary wrestler for the top seeds to face in March.

Hwt- C-: Those stall calls that fast were complete bs. He was building a base and Cassioppi was riding parallel. He deserved probably a couple stall calls sure, but to get stalled out was some of the worst officiating I've ever seen. Sam may not be an AA candidate, but he will compete hard in every match he's in.

Overall was a fun dual meet and I'm thankful our coaches have more class than the team out east.

I was there last night so I don't know how this looked on tv or how much of the off the mat stuff could be seen. The Brands boys were in rare form, even by their standards. The "it was coming from both sides" argument is weak. St. John only gestured to or interacted with the Iowa bench when Tom/Terry came halfway down the scorers table to ***** about something. The post match "activity" goes straight to Terry. Not only did he sprint to the ISU bench, but then he turned into the group and went back behind the scorers table rather then returning toward the center of the mat. I'm glad the ISU bench didn't just stand there and take it.

I've been going to college duals and tournaments for over 30 years and watched for a lot longer than that. I've seen plenty of fire and some pretty heated exchanges. I've seen hall of fame coaches and guys that are easily forgotten but I've never seen anyone conduct themselves quite the way that the Iowa coaching staff did last night. It started early and just built and built to the point where it was beyond awkward. Begging for stall calls is nothing new for them and it's been going on there for decades. But turning around and holding up the stall call to the crowd during and after pretty much every match? Tom spent the entire Marinelli match yelling "that's a takedown!" to the crowd. I'm not sure if anyone asked him why he can't coach Marinelli to get one in March when it matters.

I'm not offended, and I don't feel embarrassed for Iowa or their fans. I just think it's stupid. They're not building or promoting the sport like they always preach about and it sure as hell didn't have anything to do with making their wrestlers better. It's 50 some year old men, with a few damn near 30 year old wrestlers that act like "that guy" at bar time. Immature is another word that comes to mind. I get that we're not playing patty cake out there, but when you're clearly the better team, and arguably the best in the country, I don't see what you're accomplishing other than pandering to your mouth breathers wearing the WalMart gear.

As to the dual itself, most of it has been covered but I'll add my $.02.

DeSanto will end up hurting somebody. The only question will be when and the severity of injury. I've seen guys who are intense or who even walk the line a little, but he's not right and it's a damn shame that staff chooses to not only allow it, but encourage it. Ramazan was right there with him and I'm glad he stood up for himself a little.

As has been stated, Parker was disappointing. I've always wondered if the cut was holding back his pace, but I didn't see much difference last night. We had to have that match.

I thought Stotts acquitted himself pretty well. He was never going to win that match, but he was wrestling hard. I just never had the feeling that Devine was going to take Brands down, which is too bad. It would have been really nice to stick that match up Terry's ass.

Bastida was worth the price of admission by himself. He's got some skills and did a really nice job of controlling that match. Great job by the staff of not putting him underneath Warner.

The stall out in the hwt match was a joke. Cass locked up the leg and rode parallel most of the match. The first stall call came directly after Brands told the ref to call it. It was a damn joke, and not the way that match, or the dual should have ended.

At the end of the day, we're not recruiting or developing at the level we need to to compete with the top end of NCAA wrestling. If this group continues to move in the right direction and the cards fall right in March, you could maybe, MAYBE see a top 10-12 finish, but we're not remotely close to being a top 5 team, and that's disappointing. I'm still behind the staff and want the best for the program, but it's disheartening for sure.

One thing about Parker, he weighed in at 141 so he made the cut still. So we still don’t know what his level will be at 149. Why have him cut and then wrestle up? I doubt this is like HS where you need to tap weight once and then you get an allowance after Christmas.

The 141 is a fact? If it is I wonder why Coach said both him and Degen weighed in at 49

Would be amazing if Desantos bs got him DQed at nationals but I doubt any ref has the balls to do it.

I was going off that post earlier here that showed the lineup for both with a couple written in and said all wrestlers weighed in at available weights. It had Parker as an “or” at 141. If he did not and the post was off, I stand corrected.

Yeah the 'ThugU' thing is absolutely draped in racism.

I remember once I saw an old coach of mine on FB...there were two college teams that got into a fight, and he made some mention about how it looked like what ISU will do. This was during the Roy year iirc.

There was no other reason to say such a thing other than most of ISU's players weren't white and it's not anything different than things I've heard Iowa fans say for a long time.

This includes things they've said about their own players.

Anytime I hear one of them dip ***** say “thug u” I immediately ask them when’s the last time they got their hoods dry cleaned.
How about when he told the reporter he was going to kill them? He has ran after coaches, wrestlers and even was pulled back from crowds. Nobody else would be allowed half that many incidents.
Don’t forget saying it again to a teammates dad
