CW Pod (on IE) with Dan McCarney

I see a reflection of myself in some of the posters on this board. When DM was in his last year, I found myself on the side of saying 'get rid of him'. Now, as a different, wiser, and much older person I see myself in a pseudo similar situation. But, this time, I can't find myself saying the same thing and making the same mistake twice in my lifetime. DM was, truly, a once in a lifetime 'dedication' to the program.

It can be true that it's time to go while also being true that he accomplished relatively great things.

I wasn't against him being fired, but I wasn't exactly calling for his head either. I was pretty on the fence at the time, having grown up through the Walden years.

Sometimes a change is needed for progress, but I wouldn't have minded Mac getting a little more time.

Peaks and valleys. Who is to say 2006 wasn't just a valley the way 2003 was? Sure, 2007 and 2008 were horrible, forgettable years, and maybe that happens with McCarney just like it happened with Chizek, and he never would been able to dig out from it. But, maybe he would have. Just like he did in 2004.

I'm in this camp. I wouldn't blame Dan if he were bitter about Jamie. Mac was exactly what the program needed for his time here. Mac's dedication and passion would have made this a very difficult process for JP to fire him. I'm also guessing Pollard has learned a few things from hiring/firing coaches over the years. I like the way JP regards the football coaches as a relay race that began with Mac, because it's very true - he's the beginning, but it was time to pass the baton.

05 was the year that got him fired, 06 was the grace year that cemented it. It had become very evident that he wasn’t going to ever be able to win as much as a Big 12 north championship. They had easily the best team in the north in 05 and just completely pissed it down their legs in such inexplicably bad ways. As Jamie said, there was no way to “sell hope” with Mac at the helm anymore.

Mac is on the Mount Rushmore of ISU athletics for what he did to drag ISU from national laughingstock to respectable mediocrity. It was just very evident that he couldn’t take the next step past that.

I don’t think it’s fair to have the discussion about whether or not JP was right to move on (and I think he was) while eliding the fact that Mac was actively looking for a better job post-Insight. It’s going to take someone with a better memory to confirm the year and the job, but he was definitely trying to move on. And you know what? That’s fine, too. He absolutely belongs on the ISU Mt. Rushmore, regardless.

I need more of this.

I didn't know Dan's mom has a dental scholarship in her name.
He mentioned Johnny Majors recruiting him. It would have been cool to hear a little bit more about that and what that was like.
Bielema at 180 lbs?!?

And finally I need to hear about Pete Taylor and the treadmill.

Having the B12 North/non OU/UT/Tech schedule may have helped 2006 to get another win or two.

Problem is, you lose recruiting momentum, and it's impossible to get it back. That's where Mac had gotten. If he had a lifetime contract and kids knew he was going to be there could he get it done, yeah. But that's not how it works.

Michigan State was always the rumored spot I heard. If the wheels hadn’t fallen off the 2002 season I don’t think he would’ve been at ISU in 2003.

Seconded.

Everyone notice how many times he brought up Notre Dame tOSU and never once IA PSU?

He did a great job at ISU but his time had run it's course. I think it was best for both parties. I still think his downfall was hiring bad assistants when Loney and a lot of the guys that came with him moved on.

Let's see, top players in the B1G:
OSU / MU
MU / PSU
OSU / PSU
MU / MSU
WI / MU
NW / MSU
IL / OSU

Nope! No IA in there anywhere.

That team was dangerously close to not winning any games.

*Toledo - triple OT
*UNLV - UNLV receiver one foot OB on the potential GW TD
*UNI - had to score a TD with a minute left
*Missouri - holding call on 4th and goal

As far as the other South rotation, A&M and OSU were bowl teams, and all 3 of Baylor's conference wins were against North teams that beat ISU.
