Culture or luck?

Not that simple. Should not be a selfish decision - think “we” not “me.” What we have to fear is mutations. It cannot mutate without spreading. It cannot spread if everyone is immune. Probably just got myself in trouble, but facts are facts.
I think the team culture played a huge part in our Covid success. Behaviors matter. Was there some luck involved - absolutely. If you behave correctly, you have a better chance of staying healthy.

Yeah, the issue is mutations. The more people who get covid, the higher the chance there is that covid mutates to a degree that the vaccines are less effective. The last thing we want is for covid to turn into the Flu 2.0 where there are many different strains and it is impossible to control. We are probably past the point where we can prevent that from happening unfortunately. I wish the whole covid thing hadn't started in an election year so it hadn't gotten politicized to the degree it did.

Oh and the football thing--luck definitely happened. Covid, injuries, all that. Even the best teams need luck from time to time and that includes injuries.

Along with the uptick in talent (and better football names) ISU has also had an uptick in being fundamentally sound, and continuing to play hard no matter what. When you have that the breaks tend to go your way. I think confidence plays into that somehow too.

I'm not referring to Covid.

Making the point of irony of people calling out low % of dying of some things and the protective measures they are or aren't OK with.

I will continue to avoid crowds because I also hated crowds in 2019.

BTW the chance of dying of an animal attack is like 1/1.4 million. Run!

Nothing wrong with this... but is that for every day life... Sporting Events, Church, Stores, Concerts, Fairs, Farmers Markets, etc.??

If it’s a 10% chance of me catching Covid and with the odds being even lower of being hospitalized... I’ll take those odds (even though they are way lower than 10%)... It’s always going to be here.

Open it up and stay home if you’re scared!
Who said I was scared?

What I’m saying is that the idiots refusing to get vaccinated are leaving a vector for the disease to linger and remain a problem for all of us.

If everyone gets vaccinated? Even at 90% effectiveness, those odds go down significantly.

Yes. I went to things but if it were really crowded it was a pain in the ass and I don't miss them.

Concerts: Mostly outdoors where I could stay in the back. Even indoors I sit/stand away from clusters.
Movies: went to the earliest times.
Stores: go when it's not busy, still do.
Sporting Events: fun but give me HD TV, several games all day and saving money on food/drinks etc. and not having to spend a 4-5 hours waiting for TV time outs, ref reviews, etc.
Church: In short I do not feel a need to start going in there now.

By your post. You seemed nervous about people not getting vaccinated and that could be interpreted as being scared.

Just my opinion.

I wish I could have your approach... sometimes I just feel like I’m missing out if I’m not right in the mix of everything (nothing ever happens BTW).

That’s cool on your end. I’d like it some days!

Weary of still having to be careful solely because of other people exercising their “rights” to be idiots? Decidedly so.

Yeah, im past the point of caring now. If people don't want to get it they can deal with the consequences while I enjoy my immunity.
Are you sure you are immune?

Even the Moderna and Pfizer shots are only 90% effective. The J&J in the 70%'s.

So my understanding is people who refuse to get vaccine increase chance for those vaccinated who don't have immunity to get Covid.

I have rcvd Covid shot, but the thought of going to ISU football or basketball games this fall is still a scary prospect. Not so much for me, but for older family members I interact with.

I would have no issue with proof of vaccination being required to attend large gatherings like sporting events, concerts, etc.

The bold statement above is loaded and is dangerous to say without context.

Covid aside, I really enjoyed the partial crowds at Iowa State games last year that I attended (Texas Tech, @ Kansas and West Virginia). I love going to games in person, being outside, etc., and the partial football crowds were fine by me. I was masked and felt safe. Not sure how safe I will feel with a full crowd, even masked and vaxxed.

He said weary, not wary (could have been a typo to be fair), as in he is tired of having to deal with other people's actions

Maybe he is losing sleep over this.... And if so.. I’ll stand corrected and he needs to seek medical attention for this. Not healthy.

Also.. I didn’t get that from his statement. Really wouldn’t have made sense.
