MLB: Cubs Firesale

Twitter saying an even bigger deal with a division rival could go down. It's on Twitter so it must be true
who will reds give up??

The price better be high to make this work.

For the Cubs to let an above average pitcher who's moderately priced and under control for another season....go to a team in the division??? The Cubs better extract some strong prospects

Trust in Theo!

The fact that Pat Maholm pitched well enough to demand any interest on the open market was a win for the franchise.

Soto may never hit what he did as a rookie, but he is still a solid receiver and handler of pitchers, so he had value.

Reed was a great hustle guy, a guy that winning teams have on their roster. He does whatever you need him to do, he keeps his mouth shut, and he is great in the clubhouse.

The overall point remains how bereft the Cubs organization is in pitching. Every deal they make needs to be for arms. It may be than none of them are ever starters, but the more arms you can have in your system the better.

This is the start of putting the brand on the Cubs. It has to happen. Eat all the money you need to, and start from scratch. What you have been doing for a century hasn't worked, it's time to start over, and build from the bottom up.

Up next Dempster and Garza...hopefully. Might as well ship soriano out with Dempster

If Peter Gammons is right, Dempster's landing in LA with the Dodgers. Apparently all other options were vetoed by him, and he's real tight with Ted Lilly.

We'll know by this afternoon.

A lot of talk that Soriano will be part of that trade as well

Starting over by wholesale probably means it will be three years before the Cubs get their swagger? By the way, Carl Zambrano has been banished to the bullpen by his team.

 This made me laugh. Better late than never.

Maholm was more than "bleh". He was 9-6 with a 3.74 ERA and 5-0 with a 1.00 ERA in his last 5 starts. Combine that with him being a lefty and he was pretty damn good this year.

Ive always been a fan of Maholm. Had a rough start to the season but settled in very nice. There is a high probability that he is at his career peak right now, and if the Cubs don't plan on contending this year or next, its a good idea to part ways.

My feeling is the Cubs came out ahead on both trades yesterday, which is why they are sending cash in both trades. The only downside is, if both Dempster and Garza get dealt today, the Cubs are going to get shelled for the rest of this season. They have actually been pretty good and enjoyable to watch for the past month, but that will probably no longer be the case.

100% agree with you on all points. The Cubs are 18-10 since Rizzo was called up. They are playing their best baseball of the season, by far. I understand the need to move some of these guys but I was really hoping to see them keep Garza and Maholm, because as you said, they are closer to the peaks of their careers. But obviously management doesn't think they can sustain this level of play for a season.

The Iowa Cubs pitching staff will be raided...

Keith Law had Vizcaino as the #14 prospect heading into this year (before TJ surgery) He also believes the Cubs should try him as a starter (a potential #2 starter or better, according to Law)

They got a higher upside arm than they would have gotten for Dempster (although not near the probability). This makes me less angry at Dempster for screwing the Cubs over. Still would rather keep Demp than give him away to the Dodgers.

please dump soriano off the books

Wont happen. He will be on the Cubs books through 2014 regardless if he gets traded or not. Based off everything that is happening, I would not at all be surprised to see the Cubs eat that entire contract in return for some good prospects.

The Cincinnati Reds, one of the hottest teams in baseball, are not satisfied with their current position atop the NL Central.

The Reds, seeking to fortify the top of their rotation for a potential playoff run, are talking to the Chicago Cubs about a trade for right-hander Matt Garza, according to major league sources.

Garza, 28, has not pitched since July 21 due to fluid in his triceps area, and will not pitch again until after the non-waiver deadline at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

One source said earlier this week that it was “doubtful” that the Cubs would trade Garza because the club would not accept a discounted return due to his injury.

However, a team such as the Reds could complete a deal for Garza if its medical staff determined that his injury is minor, and that he could join their rotation soon.
The Blue Jays, sources said, also are pursuing Garza, who is under club control through 2013. The Rangers, too, are interested in Garza, but they are struggling to find a match with the Cubs, according to a source.

The Reds, who also have been looking for a leadoff hitter, might be the most motivated of any suitor, considering the potential of Garza to make an impact in the postseason.
