Creighton exhibition discussion (see post 178 for Jake's link)

Hoiberg coached in Ames for the same reason he played for ISU, it was easier for him to be successful because of fan support and because he grew up in Ames. Once he achieved his coaching success at ISU, he got the job with the Bulls and did not do well (for many reasons). As most of us probably know, the Nebraska job is just him coaching in his hometown (I'm sure the Big 10 paycheck doesn't hurt either). As I remember, Tom Osbourne also briefly recruited him as a quarterback.

I agree that TJ is a better overall coach. He has adapted his playbook more successfully based on the strengths and weaknesses of his players. While Hoiberg is a great offensive coach, his lack of defensive focus probably cost us a lot of wins during his tenure.

How would the basketball program look if Hoiberg had never left? It's fun to speculate but we'll never know. In my opinion, we will have more wins and success with TJ after 20 years than if Fred had never left (I know this scenario is very hypothetical).
It all depends on if Fred could have continued to bring in talent while other programs started using transfers also. I'm not sure Fred's teams played good enough defense to ever really win anything. TJ struck gold by getting Kyle Green here. He's a top 5 assistant and one of the best defensive minds in the game. I don't know why Fred hasn't had success at Nebraska. Its not as bad of a job as people think it is. Danny Nee won there and they have arguably the nicest arena in college basketball. Its one of the best atmospheres you'll find anywhere.

Should has no relevance to this board. We have posters that just wait to rage against ISU. It’s amazing they are fans at all.
I think it's awesome to have all fans. It's odd that fans can't come to a message board and express opinions... Negative ones and positive ones welcome, no matter how silly or outlandish or reactionary, IMHO. I have no doubt all types of fans are very much needed for Iowa State to thrive. I bet they all donate their time and passion and money too.

I will say, our fans would make fantastic message board cops across the college sports fansite universe!

Main concern after watching Friday is that we may be overly reliant on an injury prone point guard in Lipsey.

We don’t have a history of being too deep I suppose. We have had some teams flirt with greatness but key injuries have hit at the wrong moment…. Take this year’s football team for example…

I actually think PG will be alright, Toure can do that job.

We need scoring something fierce. That's less a PG issue and more an everyone else issue.
We need a creator who can set other guys up to score.

Assuming the shots start going down from Milan, I think we’ll be fine. I saw several guys that can get to the basket. Struggled finishing, but breaking down the defense will lead to open shots. Just gotta make those shots.

I get the Milan hype and think he'll be a very good pro.But what I don't love is having the entire offense centered around one person, because if they're off, you have zero shot.
Yeah, in the league they will just park him in the corner and let others drive and kick it out to him. He’s not going to be creating shots for himself. He can’t really do that against decent college players.

Losing Mason Williams definitely hurts. Lots of unknowns from a scoring perspective in the backcourt. Even with a healthy Lipsey-- his offense can be hit and miss.

Hard to maintain quality depth in the face of the transfer portal. It could be an argument for spreading out the minutes a little more.

I didn’t get a chance to watch.

One thing I was hoping for this year was that this group of freshman would not be like the last couple where we were lucky to keep 1 long term. I know basketball is different than football but I think there’s value in trying to build a team with mostly 4 year guys and not depending on majority transfers.

I think this freshman class was brought in more for the long-term. If that’s the case, we will have to be patient and deal with growing pains this year.
