Honest question, which ones did he miss at inopportune times? Iowa? I can’t think of all that many, but I guess “inopportune Times” is also pretty subjective.

Do you know what % of kickoffs we returned this year? What our average starting yard line was off a kickoff? What our opponents was off a kick off? I'd also be curious what our net punt yardage was when we returned and when we punted. \

These are "margin" special team stats that I feel we are horrible in and am curious if there is a good website that tracks things like this.

I don’t know if I’d say missed field goals in the second quarter would be inopportune. Did they end up being the difference in the game? Yeah, but random second quarter misses seem like a stretch to call that.

A stat that would be impossible to look up is how many times did we go for it on 4th down or punt because we didn’t have confidence in the kicker to make it? That happened often between the 35 and 25.

Pretty sure Assalley missed the short FG that would have won the Alamo Bowl.

We could really use a strong legged kicker, for kickoffs if nothing else.

I thought this stat was going to be that our opponents didn't miss a field goal against us this year. Little off-topic but the following kickers set new records against us: UNI, Iowa and ND kickers (might be more).

49 yards is pretty short. ISU also had drives after that end on a fumble and a punt.

History of the program and we've had what I remembered as some very clutch kickers. Assalley gets assaulted all the time when at the end of the day he's one of the special teams bright spots.

His kick rate seems to say we should have let him kick more often in those situations?

A lot of that stuff (but not all) is on the official NCAA football stats page.

ISU returned 24 kickoffs for an average of 19.88 yards per return, ISU's opponents returned 57 kickoffs for an average of 19.77 yards per return. I felt all season long ISU's strategy on kick offs was to kick the ball high between the goal line and the 5 yd line, and kick it towards the corner of the field. I thought ISU was successful with the strategy and frequently held the opponent inside the 25 yd line.

ISU had a net punting average of 38.4 yds per punt, ISU's opponents had a net punting average of 40.4 yards per punt. ISU punted 54 times (40.6 yd ave.) and had 16 returned for 99 yards, ISU's opponents punted 70 times (41.8 yd ave.) , ISU returned 10 punts for 96 yards.

I think part of it (or most of it) is that he ends up missing after a drive stalls that we really needed 7 on, so his miss just accentuates the already disappointed fans. Despite all the bluster on here, we haven't always had bad kickers outside of a few years.

It feels like Assalley and Rivera both got better as the season went on. The specialists themselves played just fine. I suppose the poster above noted that we only have a ~2 yard differential in punt returns for/against, but it felt like that was just a mess and inconsistent. We would fair catch punts with 15 yards of green ahead, and return for zero yards it seemed pretty frequently.

Accurate comment. Planned short corner kicks with goal to keep return shorter than 25 yard line.

For the 100th time they aren't trying to kick touchbacks!!!! The goal is for the ball to be caught on one side of the field around the 2-3 yard line and make the tackle before it is returned to the 25 yard line.

I didn’t really have any problems with our special teams play overall with the one huge exception being the buffoonery against Iowa.

Kicking it straight at Kansas State’s all world returner was probably a pretty stupid choice too.
