So I've been thinking of this since Jackson made announcement this week, is there the possibility that KJ is being brought on to the administrative side to have him there so that Pollard doesn't have to be as much? Now obviously, we don't know exactly since it wasn't announced what KJ's role would be, but I really wonder if KJ will be somewhat the "AD" of the wrestling department. This would allow Pollard to have someone that knows the sport well enough and help make decisions that he probably doesn't know enough about.

KJ has done wonders with guys like Quean, Kyven and others through some difficult times in their lives as student/athletes. I think this might be a great role for KJ. Helping to balance personal struggles and being a student/athlete.

I don't see that just because of how awkward it would be for him to be the admin over somebody who was hired because Jackson got let go from the position. Same reason I think there's no way he ends up the CWC coach even though I think he'd be good at it since he could just focus on a half dozen elite guys that have clear dates to peak for rather than a whole team of college kids that have to stay at a high level November-March.

All details on different guys is so all over the place, so these are the one I have heard nothing about.

From the list of people you gave that's hasn't been mentioned who is left. Could you strike some of them off if you haven't heard names as well?

Bono
Cody Sanderson
Casey Cunningham
Joe Heskett
Mat Azavedo
Paulsons (please god no)
Damian Hahn
Kish

I noticed that Varner's name is not one of the names that you are NOT hearing. I'm mildly surprised by this. I would be intrigued if he were interested but shocked also. What are you hearing on Jake?

2008 Midlands Championships 1. Iowa 156.5 2. Iowa State 153.5
157 Championship Chris Bono (Chat TD) defeats Cyler Sanderson (ISU) 4-2; TB1

I remember Sanderson telling Bono not to forfeit and to wrestle the championship finals. At this time Bono was the head coach at UTC and Cael didn't want to win the Midlands title because of having a forfeit given to him or his wrestler.

As far as the Askren situation, it is easy to look back and say we should have recruited him. I don't know what was said between Bono and Askren, nor do I care much as it doesn't change what is taking place today. I would like to think it is a lesson learn experience for sure. But lets not forget at the time we had signed the Paulsons and had a loaded class in Backes, Gallick, Lester, Cook, etc. Askren wasn't a "top recruit" and IMO his funk and style probably prevented a lot of other coaches from wanting to put a lot of stock into him. When he committed to Missouri - the program wasn't anywhere close as to what it is today. Brian Smith did a hell of a job bringing in some of the guys most top programs were passing on.

It is no secret, when Bono was training to make a World/Olympic team he was also on staff as a coach. Bono wanted to be a World/Olympic Champion and for him to accomplish this you have to put your training and self first. I don't fault him for that (or any guys in the ISU program training on the senior level) and in the end this was Coach Douglas's call and he encouraged him to continue to compete because the way he trained, competed was a great example guys needed to see. Bono's workouts were always before the team/program's practices and he never missed a team practice. Bono training not only helped himself but benefited the guys as well. At the time, college programs and clubs were not like they are today. If you were training at the senior level, you were better off being on staff and getting paid more with benefits than to rely on stipends and club salary. Obviously, the way clubs are organized and funded today things are different.

Again, Bono wouldn't be in my top 3 but definitely in my top 5.

Throughout this process, we will see where Pollard stands with Iowa State Wrestling by his hire.

As long as Pollard is at Iowa State, Varner will not be in Ames.

I was just going off the top of my head. So I missed a few Azevedo, I haven't heard of Varner, at least as a head coach.

I had assumed JP was moving Jackson into the administrative job just for the duration of his existing contract. Is that not correct?

As far as recruiting goes, I heard Mike Thorn was interested in the Cyclones, but Cael wasn't interested because he already had Nick Fanthorpe. Both were solid wrestlers.

Hindsight is 20-20

Pollard has said he will look for a position in the AD dept for KJ even after his contract is up.

It's mostly about the money, but I also want to know that there was an effort to really reach out and see who is interested in this job and what their plan is to resurrect the program. If Pollard does that and Bono or Travis end up being the best candidate then so be it, but if one of them is quickly scuttled in to fill the position without looking elsewhere we'll have confirmation of all that's been said about Pollard's apathy toward wrestling.

I agree, getting someone who wants to be here and the drive and plan to put us back on the map is what's needed.

Does this mean that you have heard Dresser's name popping up?

Pardon my wresting ignorance, but how much of a difference is there in the level between the MAC and the Big 12?

From an outsider perspective, it looks to me like each has a heavy hitter (Okie St/Missouri) each has another very good program or two (Oklahoma, Iowa State, UNI) and then filler below, especially after the Big 12 took the rest of the old WWC.

Am I incorrect? Thanks!

No way Pariano will not get serious consideration. He was ousted at Northwestern for good reason. He might get another job somewhere at some point, but it won't be from Pollard. They'd be like oil and water, won't happen.

Bono isn't a Gilbert native, he's from Florida.

If we can't get one of the homerun hires then I think the Paulson's should be promoted. They would run things quite differently than KJ, I think.

No on the Paulson's who do you think has been running the practices we need someone new!

It is so sketchy the talk you hear that some is way more believable than others. Some I am sure is just random talk. Yes I have heard Dresser's name, but nothing to think it is serious. Same with many of the others.
