CPR new DC @ Arizona

what exactly happened in that game. i remember watching and having the WTF just happened moment but don't recall the specifics. was it - kneel it and win, but we inexplicably ran the ball, fumbled and ksu had just enough time to score, take the lead and win?

It would be best not to remember it. It was the moment when a person knew that it was just fate though. Because, while the decisions were pretty ******* stupid, everything had to fall just right for Kansas State to win that game.

If they kneeled (knelt?) 3 times there would have been like 9 seconds left or something. IIRC he said his game manager sheet or whatever said to run a play. He ran with Warren, Warren fumbled and KSU scored. Next possession starts at the 27 with 15 seconds left, they decide to try inexplicably to get into field goal range somehow, Lanning fumbles, KSU runs a play to get into the center of the field, kicks a field goal. Game over.

So I lived in Ames at the time and met up with a buddy at Brick City for the game. Having fun for the most part until the 4th quarter debacle. I remember being so frustrated after the Warren fumble and KSU touchdown that I closed my tab and began heading out. Was thinking "I should be able to get home in time for OT."

Then I get in the car, turn on the radio and hear John say "And Kansas State lining up for a potential game winning field goal" Fortunately was in my car, as that was probably the loudest "WHAT THE ****???" I've ever emitted.

Sounds a bit similar to the 2007 Toledo game where we led 35-24 with 2:42 left in the game. Toledo scored two touchdowns to win 36-35. The first was a kickoff return with 2:42 left and the second was a fumble by our punter in our own end zone with 1:46 left.

Got the ball back at midfield, KSU had one time out. Precarious situation because time would have still been on the clock had they just kneeled it, so they ran it with a freshman who had already fumbled once. He fumbles, KSU goes down and scores. ISU runs a play, fumbles, and KSU recovers and kicks a field goal. It was a full on meltdown on the sidelines.

There were ways to take more time off the clock than just kneeling it and having 'low risk'. My tin foil hat thinks CPR was trying to get Warren 200 yards for the day instead of just getting out of there.

I think that game just destroyed Warren mentally. He was never the same.

As per my earlier post, they could have had Lanning just run parallel to but behind the line of scrimmage and go down as soon as a KSU player is close. Then I think the downed player can give the ball to a specific ref, and the clock would still be running while they're spotting the ball for the next play.

I saw Wisconsin do a similar thing a couple of years ago vs. NW or someone.

Either way a lower risk than a hand off to the teeth of a ball hawking KSU defense.

Im proud too that cpr's defense will hit'em coming off the bus...LOL....never seemed to work against most big 12 opponents....Best of luck cpr

"Hit'em coming off the bus" was a great line at the time. I loved CPR. For all the grief we give him about losing games, at least he did have us in competitive positions for the win. A lousy coach couldn't have done that.

when was this or just that one win specifically?

he made me believe Iowa state could beat good teams. No other coach had done that.

OSU was the big one, but winning at Nebraska and Texas weren’t things we were used to either.

Definitely a stark contrast in his teams from his first 4 years to his final 3

That night was hands down the drunkest I’ve ever been on a road game trip. Beers were deleted in aggieville that night.
