Seemed like most of my friends growing up moved from the NES to the Genesis. It seemed so much cooler than the SNES, maybe because it seemed more different from what we were used to on the NES. So at the time, I'd say Genesis.
Today though, in hindsight it is SNES for me no contest. I still play a lot of retro games and there is a lot more stuff in the SNES library that still holds up for me today versus Genesis.

While on the subject, I think Stardew Valley captures the SNES spirit better than any game since that platform went away.
I had an SNES but thinking back on it I had way more fun playing Genesis. Most of the games have already been mentioned, but I'll throw out Streets of Rage as an advantage for Sega.
Speaking of emulators, someone built a Raspberry Pi Emulator for me a looooong time ago. I can’t remember the start up sequence though. Some combination of buttons on the controller, which funny enough is a USB which looks like an SNES controller, would reset Emulation Station and get me back to the list of games.
I have pretty much every NES, SNES and Genesis, plus a few other games from other platforms.
Wish I could remember that combo. LoL.
EDIT: and yes…I tried “up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, select, start”
Also I’m sure people know this but you can play a huge catalog of SNES and Genesis games (and gameboys, n64, GameCube, etc) on Nintendo Switch (with a 39.99 yearly membership.
Playing OG Gameboy, Gameboy color, and Gameboy advance games on an OLED screen is pretty great compared to what we had to do as kids to see the screen properly.

SNES has some of the best games ever made, especially if you are a JRPG fan.
Super Mario World, Mario Kart, Super Metroid, Super Castlevania, Final Fantasy 4 5 & 6, Chrono Trigger, Lufia 1 and 2, Breath of Fire 1 and 2, Earthbound, Donkey Kong Country, best version of Street Fighter 2, Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past.

Interesting you say that, because I remember it being the exact opposite at the time, the SNES could render 3D better, but the Genesis had more innovative games.
SNES guy. The triumvirate of SMW, A Link to the Past, and Super Metroid we about the most dominate set of first party titles as has ever existed. Throw in Super Mario Kart and Donkey Kong Country and you have some of the best games in history. Although I did enjoy hanging out with friends who had a Genesis to play Altered Beast, Golden Axe, and the Mutant League Sports games.

my daughter is 9 and I would think she would enjoy playing some of these classic games such as Mario Kart, etc. What would be the best way to play these games on a budget? Would it be best to get a Nintendo Switch?
For me, that depends on your definition of “budget”.
Switch itself is, what, $350? Maybe it’s not that much, but last I looked I think it was that. Maybe that was with a game or two and there are cheaper options, I don’t know.
Then…to play those retro games, there is an annual subscription. Not sure what that costs.

Legally yes. If you don't mind breaking the law and you have a computer it doesn't have to cost you anything. Admittedly I haven't downloaded any ROMS in a long time so I dont know how readily available they are now. I can say I have a Switch and it is a great system for kids.
A switch lite is a lot cheaper, and probably can be found at a discount on Facebook Marketplace.
If you want to play these games in Mobile only its a nice alternative. You won't be able to dock and play on a larger TV.

Is NBA Jam available on the Switch. And what about the old school Pokémon Blue and Red?
Not at the moment but it changes up every so often. The Pokemon games are rarer though for some reason even though Nintendo owns Pokemon.
Lef's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Evee were essentially 3D remakes of of Yellow which is an enhanced version of Red and Blue. Those are Switch titles that should still be readily available.
That’s what I was going to say - if you liked the JRPG’s of that time SNES couldn’t be beat.
Yeah it’s not even close for me.
As I mentioned, I liked Zelda (NES), but I also liked the Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest in Japan) games as well. That franchise never released an SNES game in the US. I didn’t care much for Final Fantasy or Crystalis, which were similar games to DW, because there was way too much “story” I had to wait through before I could play.
