Concession Stands at Hilton

Not to derail, but am I the only one confused by the "Walking Taco" thing?

A taco is a pretty decent travel companion as it is, especially a soft shell. The one time I tried a walking taco, I found it a lot harder and messier to try and eat than just a taco. Taco chips just aren't meant to be eaten with a utensil.

I don't do the Clone Cones, but don't mess with the Walking Taco.

Our concession story for the night: We thought about a snack, since it was just the two of us. We got in about 15 minutes before tipoff, saw the lines, and conceded that getting a snack meant missing part of the game. We passed and headed right to our seats. We just wanted that more this time.

I rarely get food, so I just wish at each stand they'd have a line just for drinks and drink refills. Then for the food they just need to have a better assembly line. When there are 40 people standing out in line, you know that there are going to be a lot of popcorn orders, so just have 5-10 boxed up and ready to go at all times.

Walking Tacos with double meat are great! Sloppy is good.

How would you enhance a fajita, though?

Everyone should have to work at a job like this at some point in their life.

So us normal people that can do math and multi task can tell them now to hurry the hell up because its not that hard?

*I put myself thru college working at a gas station, and it was more work and multi tasking than these people are doing.

Eat and drink before you come?

Easy enough, and I tend to skew that direction, but from my outside perspective, it's pretty obvious ISU is missing sales by not making the concessions more efficient. If people know they can get a drink or food in a couple minutes, they would see more repeat customers.

I'm picking up what you're putting down. Gyro and superdog carts on the catwalks outside.

Food trucks in the parking lots near Hilton. Prohmdogs and McKay Fries and Georges Onion Rings and 3sus Nachos and Nader Tenderloins and Monte Walking Tacos with amazon drone/blimp delivery inside Hilton. Or just have Hickory Park cater as they are faster than a mouse on fire for serving.

They lost me years ago when they went cheap on the nachos - JP's legacy was cemented in my mind that day...

Half jimlad:)

I don't go to a lot of sports events outside of Iowa State, it is typical to have volunteers run the stands elsewhere? Seems the biggest problem is having all the inexperienced people that don't know how to kick it into higher gear and spend most of their time trying to count or find things. Wells Fargo always has lines 3x as long as Hilton and they move pretty darn fast in comparison.

Most places I go hire out for their Concessions, but when you have an Accountant for an AD...

I don't think it's that uncommon. I know the Metrodome always had volunteer groups for Vikings/Twins/Gopher games. I think though, that there were some roving stadium employees to help coordinate the volunteers and in my experience at Hilton, they basically set you up and then disappear until it's time to collect the money.

You could sell hot dog and nacho tickets on line and just present them for food at the concession.
You could buy a meal ticket that allows pickup of food.
You could put your smart people on the register only.
You could make the food only two prices.
You could practice like Bar Rescue.
You could give out free food if you cannot deliver within fifteen minutes.
You could actually fix it.

Most businesses go out of their way to make money with sales. Why not, JP?

Two walking taco stands out of meat from 10 minutes before tip off to tip. Poor organization and service.

At the risk of getting back on topic, it's because there is no process-management. The clerk takes your order, walks around to get everything, then comes back to take your money. If I'm getting one pop or 15 hot dogs it doesn't matter because everyone has to stand in the same line.

Perhaps they could try an experiment with one concession stand where there is one line for the whole stand and one worker takes each customer from start to finish down the line (like a Subway). Another idea might be to have a dedicated hot dog person, dedicated nacho person, dedicated pop person, etc who get those items for each cashier so the cashier only has to stand in one spot and take orders and process payment.

If I've learned one thing from bar rescue or restaurant impossible it's that the less a worker has to move around the quicker things go.
