Computer Help!

I recently bought a netbook, about 4 months ago, and am now starting to have a problem. Everything was running great, but now my system is getting bogged down and everything is running slow. Music and video are choppy, surfing is sometimes slow, and even typing can lag.

My free 3 month subscription to McAfee just expired. Could that be the problem? It is constantly asking me to renew. I have done a full system scan with housecall.antivirus.com (free from trend micro) and have run Spybot Search and destroy.

Even the windows start-up "tune" is choppy when I first start my computer. My top three processes are System Idle, firefox, and TeaTimer.exe which I have found out is part of Spybot.... which I downloaded after the problem has started.

Can anyone give me any advice? It seems as the my computer is constantly "processing" something and I can't figure out what.

Should I delete McAfee, since it is expired, and purchase something else?

Can you try running a hijack this and posting the log?

Haha I can assure you it isn't the porn... that's what the other computer is for... only joking, only joking.

Honestly though that shouldn't be the problem unless the roommates are culprits... in which case if my roommates are looking at porn on my computer I will throw fisticuffs. :biglaugh:

I got rid of all my McAfee and nortons since I was running slow. I went to Kaspersky Internet security, and it seems to be fine now.

Alos get rid of stuff like Limewire and foxfire type stuff

Honestly all I have on it for programs is Firefox, Picasa, an IM program, Windows Media Player, Quiktime, and Google Desktop (which it came with). I really have nothing on it, it was meant for surfing and now it seems as though I can't even do that....:skeptical:

Is firefox really a problem? I've used it for years on my other computer and have had not had a single problem... i thought it was one of the best out there.

If you want to try a fast low resource browser try Chrome.

Hit ctrl/alt/delete and then taks manager/processes

Sort my mem usage. What are your top 10?

Pull up the Task Manager and see if any particular process is hogging the CPU.

Just as an example. I've had this same Chrome browser open for the last 2 hours and I have 4 tabs open. It's using 45K of total memory.

about:memory in Chrome will get you those memory stats

I just launched IE and after 30 seconds it's using 49K with one tab.


With all that being said, all the browsers are pretty close now and your speed problem is somewhere else.
