COLUMN: Resolutions for the Cyclones in 2020

Chris,

Nice article. Good goals for the teams. Very fun to see wrestling back toward the top.

As for the message board itself, I have a suggestion that may be a bit counter-intuitive:

  • Limit the number of posts someone can make in a day.

We need some troll/idiot repellent. Of course, we can make exceptions for those who are clearly assets for the community (e.g. @ImJustKCClone).

Perhaps also prevent new posters from starting threads until they have gotten a certain number of likes for their posts. This is mostly to prevent banned trolls from coming back with alternate usernames.

And to help manage the workload of the Mods, perhaps set up an appeal panel of frequent posters (approved by the Mods) who can handle requests for exceptions based on compelling evidence.

I think the biggest destructive force on message boards are the trolls and Negative Nancies who criticize everything. I've seen other sports boards collapse under the burden of so-called superfans who know everything, post constantly, and drive away those who are "mere fans." One thing that makes CF great is that there is room for all sorts of fans.

Good starting points. Agree w/ all the football points. I think some fans interpret "beat Iowa" with assumption we'd rather beat Iowa than the "important" Big 12 games. How about both?

Minor semantical nitpick: " ... Iowa State was a play or two away from winning nine games." Is it possible to be one play away from winning two additional games? Wouldn't it require at least two plays? :)

As in the culture at large, more civility would be an appreciated goal for 2020. There are WAY too many attack dogs who post on here. If you want an example, take a look at the non-sports side of CF (although it’s getting worse with sports). Post an opposing view and the “experts” excoriate you.

It is about time to beat Iowa in both football and basketball...likely looking at dropping 3 in a row to Fran. Are there many teams that he's beaten three times in a row?

One thing with CMC vs. Iowa is he's only faced good Iowa teams and still was close despite ISU not being all that sharp. The other coaches at least got a bad or marginal Iowa team to break through.

A goal above that imo would be to get that 4th consecutive bowl game.

Hey now!!!

Message Board improvement suggestions: Once In State Rivals threads reach 300 posts, they automatically close. Everything that can be said, or should be said is easily said by then. And, they don't continue to dominate the Recent Posts.

Also like all of Cysk's ideas.

Re: Game day threads. Some people hate them, but I would hate to see them go away. When they are not wildly entertaining, they at least provide excellent group therapy for elements of this fan base.

I don't want to be a negative poster...but I think we need to be honest as a fan base that our Cyclones are in a mediocre funk in Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Volleyball and Wrestling. Prohm, Fennelly and Dresser are average coaches at best and the results are showing. We will definitely not be making the NCAA in mens basketball tournament this year...not a chance (Hilton has lost its magic as players don't seem to care - which is a coaching problem).

I still have hope in Campbell and his staff of beating Iowa and finishing in the top 20 in football next year.

Regardless I will still be cheering for ISU in 2020 and forever!

What bothers me is the amount of people who quickly post negatives about our team coaches players after a loss then seamingly the same people think we should beat Alabama or Clemson after a good win. What to do about it I’m not sure other than it is human nature I guess.
Sometimes I think it better when we didn’t have internet. Not really but just wish we could collectively count to ten or something before we post.

I wonder if in 1997 and Nebraska came in and beat a very good ISU team in Hilton, if people were melting down in their homes and how they coped. I was in middle school and remember being pretty frustrated by that loss....but reading and replying with a message board really takes the emotions up a notch.

Well, we'll just have to see if football can do better with this.

Because options 1 and 2 are dead in the water.

Yeah, the men's basketball team is spinning in the toilet right now. Things are not good and not looking up. I just took a bet with William Hill taking ISU under 8.5 conference wins.

This is a spectacular disaster and one that most coaches this far into their tenure cannot recover from. Tonight is the basketball version of the Baylor 71 ISU 7 football game from 2013.

Is it possible for the bball team to blow both of their 2020 goals before the end of 2019? I say yes.

Except Baylor was good.
