Coaching Search Thread

Meh, just go Scheelhaase. He seems like he's got the ingredients to be a big-time HC.

I'm not really interested in hiring like the 5th NDSU coach that won a lot of games, like everyone before him.

Toledo chose to hire Candle as the HC (get promoted) - don't think Campbell was fine with that? Maybe forced Toledo's hand to do just that (possibly)

When Campbell was bringing his whole Toledo staff here, felt like the Candle hire was a "stop the bleeding" move.

He didn't entirely gut Toledo when he came to ISU (Candle was OC there & was elevated to HC)
Just thinking they have some sort of succession plan in place given the success of the culture established, so why not continue with the same if it has been working (to an extent)
Yeah IDK what it is, but guarantee CMC and JP have a plan.

Either someone internal to take over today. and you know JP has a list - which probably includes people off the CMC tree (e.g. Scheelhaase, Viedt, Candle, Golesh, et al).

I'm not sure who internal. Heacock is more likely to hang it up than become a head coach, I would guess. I don't think Mouser is ready, but is Broomfield? Broomfield seems like there is more "there" there, than Mouser.

This one is brutal and it seems like Kelly is our best option.

Losing Matt Campbell is as brutal as it gets. Before he came here we were the laughing stock of the conference. He brings in guys like Montgomery, Breece, Purdy, Lazard, McDonald, etc. and gets the guys to buy into the program and makes us respectable again. He was easily the best possibly candidate for the job. I know we all had a lot of frustrations with some of the play calling, coaching personnel, etc. but everyone here knew there wasn't a better fit at the head coaching gig than CMC. Good luck to him, and without him, the last 10 years would have been hopeless in football. Wish he would've left earlier in the season because this puts the team in a horrible situation.
Kelly who? McGillis?

That feels like Les Miles at KU hire...

When you look at what the reality of college football currently is, someone like NS as a passing game coordinator for Sean McVay on a head coaching track in the NFL, they would need to be very tied to the university to consider it, IMO. And NS just wasn't that for ISU.

My first choice if Campbell doesn't take a bunch of the staff with him would be to continue on from within his coaching tree and retain as many as possible. The program has been so laser focused with the way we do things that I don't think the culture and the way they do things would change with the right leader among them. We'd probably just be looking at some different strategies and level of aggression on the field.

First call is Tim Polasek at NDSU.
  1. That other coach from Wisconsin we currently have is doing pretty well at MBB
  2. He's a combined 26-2 as HC
  3. Can bring a staff with him, plus a lot of roster pieces
  4. NDSU president is coming to Iowa State soon anyway, might as well bring the HC
If Tim says no, you call Scheelhase
Third call is probably to Hartline. Even though he just took the USF job, we are P4 football that he could recruit 5-star receivers easily
