Coaching Search: Place your bets

There are so many intriguing candidates, I am going to be seriously bummed if it ends up being TJ.

I won't necessarily be seriously bummed if it is TJ, but I will be very disappointed if it becomes obvious that he was hired within a few days without JP doing his due diligence and doing an actual head coach search.

For as rough as these past two seasons have been and for the rut our program is currently in, I still have to imagine that coaching in a league like the Big 12 has to hold some appeal for a few young, up and coming type of coaches who would deserve a serious look, such as the aforementioned Dennis Gates of Cleveland State or a guy like Kyle Neptune on Villanova's staff.

Hire some guy named Dennis Gates or hire someone you know and trust. Fans are stupid funny.

Dumb post is dumb.

The guy who you are so instantly dismissive of just earned his program a spot in the NCAA tournament in his 2nd season there, and Cleveland State was in pretty bad shape when he took over.

He was also an assistant to Leonard Hamilton at Florida State for a few years; Hamilton is one of the best and most underrated coaches in the entire country.

But yeah...makes total sense to crap all over this guy and just give TJ the job because he really loves Ames...

He’s currently one of the most up and coming coaches in CBB. If he succeeds again next year I could see him being the most sought after coach on the market. He’s like a Campbell. He does more with less.

And he's the only guy people have talked about other than Fred or Altman who have lead a successful rebuild. Not that TJ or Smith couldn't do it, we just haven't seen proof. We have proof with Gates. That gives him the nod IMO, if we don't hire him, someone else is going to very soon.

Yeah I mean who knows what his thoughts are on his future. We may not be a viable option for him for whatever reason. I do think it’d be stupid to not reach out to him. I’ll for sure be keeping his name in my memory bank for the future to see where he ends up. (If it’s not in Ames, hopefully)

Sounds like Minnesota has strong interest in Gates.

The only way I’ll truly be excited about TJ other than him simply not being Steve is if TJ gets the job one month from now (meaning the decision at least seems to be thought out and other candidates were serious), AND TJ / Jamie sell the hire. I want to hear from Jamie and why he believes TJ is the guy and I want to hear from TJ how he’s going to change the entire culture here.

I know that TJ will say things that we want to hear, but it’ll be nice to hear someone different than Prohm say “we gotta do a better job at boxing out” lol.

If Pollard announces TJ is the next coach in the next week, I’ll be disappointed. I’ll obviously be excited for something new, but I’ll be skeptical and worried we’ll yield similar results to last years team.
Waiting a few weeks and the right words from Jamie and TJ doesn’t really mean anything. Most coaches will say the right thing from day one. It’s just words. TJ is the guy that we passed up on to hire Prohm, and now he has 11 wins in the Mountain West.

Avery Johnson? Why should he not be considered? Brought in many of the current Alabama players that Nate Oats is now using and Top 10.

Has Avery been talked about yet?

Avery would be an interesting candidate.

He has NBA playing, coaching experience and his NBA coaching record is pretty solid. But he was never able to get his Bama teams above .500 over 4 years. So my question, could he not adopt his NBA knowledge to the college game? IMO there is a difference between coaching a team of elite, elite players vs. coaching average to All-Conference players.

@JStanz51 ,
Reference, fyi.

Big fan of Gates and Tang. Will be interesting to see if Gates is in the mix at Penn State. I know he's got a prior relationship with the AD there. Tang is an intriguing one because of all his ties in Texas and the long-term success he's had with Scott Drew. Just have to wonder if he wants to be a head coach again. Can't imagine he hasn't had opportunities previously.

Agree. Tang is a much better choice than TJ.

I know, that you know, a TJ hire isn’t about TJ’s love of Ames. But you’re correct. Ignorance isn’t a good reason to go with familiarity, going with TJ, a guy you’re familiar with, thereby dismissing candidates like Gates. The search process won’t result in Jamie knowing candidates personally as well as he knows TJ, but he can know their pitch on how they plan to turn around what is currently the worst program in the conference.

1.) Rick Pitino ( Guy is a winner) or John Bielen
2.) Prohm for another year using COVID as an excuse or lack of funds for a buyout.
3.) Hoiberg ( you have to somewhat feel like his run was lightning in a bottle from what we have seen of him elsewhere)
