Coaching Search: Place your bets

I’m watching Cleveland state. I would take this coach. Team gets up and down, plays defense, hustles and they have an identity. Nobody standing around.
Dennis Gates. Second year as Cleveland HC after 8 years on Leonard Hamilton's staff at FSU
That is some good pedigree right there. And he actually turned a horrible program around in 2 years. Last head coach ISU got from an Ohio school turned out pretty good.

@JStanz51, Have you included this guy in your article-to-come?

Impression: Leader, motivational, charismatic, winner, pedigree

I like him, at or near top of my list. I hope we take a hard look.

If you are going outside the box. Why not hire an African American coach. Makes more sense than a white woman!

Anthony Grant - Dayton HC
Dennis Gates - Cleveland State HC
Dana Ford - Mo State HC
Dwayne Stephens - Mich St Asst
Micah Shrewsberry - Purdue Asst.
Jerome Tang - Baylor Asst.

@JStanz51 ,
Reference, fyi.

I’d be surprised if any close source to Jamie knew who Jamie was going to pick or had an inclination. I have info from a source that Jamie keeps these things incredibly close to the vest and when we hired Steve it essentially came out of nowhere to essentially everyone.

I’m not saying it won’t be TJ. He’s definitely on the list. After seeing a bunch of people saying their source thinks it’s TJ, I just thought I’d give out some info that might calm some people down lol.

This is different though as their is a buyout and Jamie needs to keep a few informed who are going to pay that buyout.

While true, I’d still be surprised if someone connected to a big donor knew that it was TJ already.
Agree.
And I gotta think even Pollard knows it would be incredibly irresponsible, both from a professional and analytics standpoint, to hire a close friend, and the guy that you were rumored to want most 6 years ago, without the due process of a "search" and other interviews.

Jamie would.

And if he does, he could be correct. But if he goes this route, and is wrong, he’ll lose a lot of support with people he needs. As another poster mentioned, is JP planning on making the next hire?

What do you mean by this?

If I'm JP, Gates is on my short list. Checks lots of boxes, I swear every time I hear about him, the word culture gets brought up.

I saw last night they scored over 60pt in the paint, not through post players but mostly from playing downhill and attacking the rim with perimeter players. Nice to see a coach identify his teams strengths and his opponents weaknesses.

Yeah I talked about the culture thing last night. The guys on ESPN couldn’t have had more praise for him and I heard culture at least 3 times. It reminded me of how Campbell is talked about.

If we’re going to be taking flyers on mid-majors, take a shot on a guy like this. Or Craig Smith.

I did not realize Charlie Henry was an assistant at Alabama under Oats. He is building a very good resume, and with now with Alabama turning around, I could see his next step being a head coach.
Yeah, I think he is going to be a head coach for a CBB team real soon and I think he will be a good one. The guy already has head coaching experience and I would not be mad about him being on the list of possibilities.

Late to the game. In terms of wants, Beilein and Moser are at the top of my list. I think Moser could come in and have an impact that is similar to Beard immediately (competitive with lesser talent due to scheme). But, have been told there is not much mutual interest.

Think TJ is the pick.
I don't think Moser would make it in the Big 12. I just picture McDermott at ISU 2.0

Yeah, I really like Gates. The culture he built there in two years is super impressive.

I doubt he gives a **** coming off the CMC hire. You don’t become a tenured P5 AD by being easily influenced by random fans. There’s no reason to waste a bunch of money on a search if he knows what he wants to do. JP is the man and the only things that have any influence on it are big donors and his revenue projections. Hilton can’t be a graveyard over the next two years.

I hope we’re casting a net this wide once again, if Jamie can’t get a proven coach to take on this challenge for market rate.

He’s my Covid budget hire if there weren’t support for buyouts. As you would expect Charlie has matured a lot since he was made a leader of 18-24 year olds when not much older himself. He always had the technical chops. He would be an even bigger flight risk, but thsts a good trade off for bringing wins

There are so many intriguing candidates, I am going to be seriously bummed if it ends up being TJ.
The only way I’ll truly be excited about TJ other than him simply not being Steve is if TJ gets the job one month from now (meaning the decision at least seems to be thought out and other candidates were serious), AND TJ / Jamie sell the hire. I want to hear from Jamie and why he believes TJ is the guy and I want to hear from TJ how he’s going to change the entire culture here.

I know that TJ will say things that we want to hear, but it’ll be nice to hear someone different than Prohm say “we gotta do a better job at boxing out” lol.

If Pollard announces TJ is the next coach in the next week, I’ll be disappointed. I’ll obviously be excited for something new, but I’ll be skeptical and worried we’ll yield similar results to last years team.
