Coaching Search: Place your bets

Seems like a prime candidate for the Goofer job?
I would expect the Gophers will make a run at Mussleman and Dutcher because of their dad's association with Minnesota.

With the George Floyd aftermath and progressive nature of Twin Cities, I would also expect a big push for an African American candidate to get a serious look. Anthony Grant might make sense.

Gopher basketball fans have a pretty inflated view of their hoops program, so I would expect Medved or Smith to be down the pecking order. But hiring a local boy would still be a big win.

Didn't scroll through past posts in this thread, but would we have a shot at Musselman - Arkansas? He was awesome a Nevada and will prolly have Ark as a 2, or 3 seed. Again, it would be a long shot, but is there a chance ?
I wish but no, zero chance that happens

I think the biggest thing is Fred was one of the first coaches to recruit heavily using the transfer pipeline. He had some of his best players come from other schools. It was a new concept back when Fred was HC. Now the college game is flooded with transfer players each year. He would be facing more competition when going after quality transfers this time around.

I am not saying Fred could not succeed this time around, he will just face some new challenges.
This is a myth being perpetuated by the butthurt Fred haters. The transfer market was HUGE before Fred and its huge now. The difference is Prohm can’t get them. If Fred were to come back and wanted transfers he’d get them.

Other than the Royce White year, Fred's teams relied on 4 year guys just as much as tranfers. Ejim, Niang, Morris, Naz, Thomas were the glue, and the transfers took us to another level. Prohm has gotten some good ones (Shayock, Coleman-Lands, Bolton, but whiffed on too many. I think his bigger problem is that Solomon Young is the only "4" year player he's had in his entire tenure here. That's really bad for program continuity and he was left trying to build a whole new roster 3 years in a row. That can work if you are getting studs, but we weren't.

Fred, or whoever the next coach is can still get a couple solid transfers every year to help fill in the gaps, but they'll need to get guys who stick around for more than a year or two as well.

Fwiw, Tim miles appears to be taking the New Mexico job so prohm isn’t going there

he will probably have to go the assistant route and try to rebuild his career. these last two seasons, especially this one, has done a lot of damage to his resume. should of left last year if he wanted to be a head coach right away

Oh absolutely. A main problem with Prohm's tenure is how many player gaps were always needing filled. It became finding bodies instead of filling needs.

I’m always amused by fans when coaching searches come around. They watch game clips, look up stats, read resumes, yada, yada, yada. None of it matters. We should know this by now. What really matters is fit. Fred fit. Matt Campbell fits. Steve Prohm NEVER fit. The right fit for our basketball program(besides Fred) could be a high school coach. It could be the head coach at UNLV. It could be the head coach at SDSU or Drake. Stats and game clips will never tell you the story. That is exactly the kind of thing that landed Steve Prohm here in the first place. At THAT time TJ was the fit. Steve Leath blew it for us. I don’t know if TJ is still the fit (I know Fred would be). That will be Jamie’s job to figure out. There’s a good chance TJ could be the right guy because he’d be here for the right reasons. Whatever has happened at UNLV is meaningless.

Assistants do a ton of the recruiting. Craig Smith can coach, let the assistants do most of the recruiting. If you get good recruiters. Craig Smith is the better coach between him and TJ>
HC also have to be able to recruit, they may not do all the heavy lifting but they do recruit and have to be able to do so at a high level.
