Coaching Search: Place your bets

My Fire Jamie Pollard campaign will officially begin on the day we hire TJ.

And then if TJ wins?

The anti-TJ posts on this board are weird. He may not be the perfect candidate but Iowa State could do FAR worse. Personally, I’ll support anyone because they are likely much better than our current coach.

Plus he’s a Cyclone. He’s going to be very motivated if he comes here and ISU is a better fit for him recruiting-wise than UNLV.

I very much dislike the idea of hiring the failing coach of UNLV for gods sake.

But if Jamie want him, we’ll just have to accept.

I suppose you want to hire a coach that’s currently failing at Nebraska?

We get it, every other post of yours is hating on TJ.

Proven successful tactic at the mid-major level. Not so much in the Big 12. There’s no defense that is good enough to play in the 60’s in this league.

Totally agree, I just posted in another thread, something similar but not as well said. Awesome coach, going to be really hard to rebuild, then win here consistently, with that style for a lot of reasons.

I suppose you haven’t seen anything from me even hinting at support for the nebraska coach.

Niang was a consensus top 100 recruit, state player of the year in his class, state tournament MVP, key member of a national powerhouse AAU team and way too much more to mention.

The idea that he was some "YMCA" player before Hoiberg groomed him is laughable at best and offensive to Niang at worst.
Fair enough. Yes, he was a top 70 recruit out of HS. He definitely had game. The choice of words was poor but refers to what all these basketball "experts" used to say about Georges. He has an "old man's game" and it probably won't translate well in the NBA because he is too slow and not athletic enough. To Georges' credit he worked hard and got to that next level and proved many wrong. He proved what many Cyclone fans already knew. George is a great person, intelligent, high basketball IQ, and hard worker, and he has game.

He did thrive in Hoiball and was showcased very well by Fred. Foster was top 60-65 coming out of high school. I was just saying that Foster could be a big piece of what Fred could use in his second rebuild.

Fred would be amazing for XF.

Any of those guys as good as Royce White?
yet you want altman?
I just really want to win. I really don't know who would be a good fit to get that job done but this seems like such a major rebuild that a proven winner may have to be hired...but finding the right guy is above my pay grade.

In response to OP's question, I don't have any particular names on my head, but here are my criteria.

Who do you WANT to hire?
A coach (head or first-ranked assistant) who is from a successful Power 6 team where he feels underappreciated or he could have done more in another school where he can get the resource and support to showcase his full talent and take a team to a new height.

An assistant coach from the NBA whose credibility is well-established and who wants to get into to college game and has the ability to run a successful program (ex. Juwan Howard).

Who do you think we WILL hire?

A head coach from a mid-major team. If the athletics dept. budget is the major deciding factor for the hiring, I hope we can hit the jackpot as we did with Coach Matt Campbell.

Who do you definitely NOT want to hire?
A coach not good at Xs and Os or developing players, but only good at hyping the fanbase up for selling false hope.

The bottom Line
Whoever our next head coach is, he must establish a winning culture right away and makes sure the way of winning is sustainable. I don't mind if he is being a hardnosed type of coach with an intense personality or not media-friendly, as long as he can meet this fanbase's expectation and make us proud of this program again, he will get my vote.

Weird? Really? You don't think the Parker search firm that Jamie employs could attract interest from better, more accomplished coaches than Oztelberger? My god, the UNLV program has gotten worse since he's been there.
I think campaigning for TJ is weird...

Agreed - TJ is 105-77 in his career for a .576 winning percentage, including 25-26 at UNLV.

I am not a Prohm fan by any means, but he was 104-29 (.782) when we hired him.

I’m no Fred apologist, but I don’t hold the bulls record and the Nebraska record against him. Nebraska is historically a terrible basketball school. He has already proven to me that he can be successful here. TJ hasn’t, not by a long shot. We will see how year three turns out if he’s still there.

I see Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press has already sent Pitino down the road and seems to think Smith should be the new Gopher HC.
Not surprisingly TJ (or Fred) didn't make his top 12. Also curious to see DeVries didn't make his list, but Tim Miles did.

Just don’t confuse posters who say that TJ is not their first choice as being anti-TJ. I fully admit he is not my first choice, but will support him 100 percent if that is the direction that Pollard go. Plus, I appreciate that he is a Cyclone and like the fact that this would likely be his “dream job.”

I dont know how to break it to you guys but the team won 0 games this year. It's basically impossible to have a full season and do a worse job than Steve Prohm did this season. So literally whatever coach you pick can not really be worse than Steve Prohm.

Living up here in Eagan is a trip. 96% of the people up here dont seem to care about the Goofs at all but the few that do seem to think their programs are elite. Pitino is having issues but it's not as bad as they make it out to be in my opinion.

This is 100% fair and pretty much where I’m at. The only way I don’t want TJ is if he’s Pollard’s only focus. Do a full search and if he’s the best option, hire him.

But there is a segment out there saying “TJ = Prohm” which is ridiculous. He may be successful, he may not. But no one knows how it will turn out.
