Coaching Search: Place your bets

Sounds like TJ is the favorite from a decent a pretty good source. Wouldnt bet my life on it.

Thing is, I'll support TJ if he is the guy, and I think most of us on here will. I just don't want Pollard to zero in on him if there's interest from others.

I think guys like Altman and Matta are longshots (and that's probably being generous), but if there's anything there you follow through to the extent possible.

Heck, if Pollard hires TJ without even talking to Craig Smith, I'd be a little upset.

I would take craig smith. I know the Gophers are interested in him, too. He's from Minnesota, so rumors are out there that he would leave utah for Minn. Honestly, the ISU job is a better job than the Gophers.

Fred has made it known he would come back to ISU. I heard he even did so before he took the Nebraska job.

Now if Pollard wants him, I don't know.

Making that known before NU is a lot different than now. So many more variables to consider to wonder if its even being considered by either party. If a donor was told that back then, it now just might be their wishful thinking stirring up all this again.

Pretty close to what I think. But I have no idea where I’d put Hoiberg.

I put Hoiberg under 'Solid' - I think there's enough legitimate concerns about a second go-around to say he's a home run, but he's proven he can win here and would be better than Prohm. And would bring fans back.

Well at this point, who wouldn’t be better? ;)

I very much dislike the idea of hiring the failing coach of UNLV for gods sake.

But if Jamie want him, we’ll just have to accept.

I didn’t say I think TJ is the right hire but people getting on Pollard need to look at the guys resume and what he has done for ISU collectively

exactly

I think Hoiberg could be successful round two, BUT it would likely take longer to get that success this round with the dumpster fire we have now and the state of men’s basketball (ie transfer market different now)

I personally think it would be extremely stressful coming back with the success you had round 1 because people will expect that or better very soon and I’m not sure that success will happen. I think Fred is a winner, but I only want him this time ifhe is 100% bought in

just my two cents

Agree. I guess a positive for me at least is that it would excite 'most' of the fan base and if getting some Hilton Magic belief going again, sold-out cheering crowds, it might add a few extra wins along the way. Why couldn't it be built up again? Eventually.

If it is TJ then that is JP saying a middle of the road MBB team (top end) is acceptable as long as football is competing for top spots. Maybe it’s JP’s PTSD from when the Big XII just about crumbled and Iowa State was just about relegated to a non-power conference. Not where I wish we would be at, but I understand it.

If JP settles for TJ, I will still be an ISU MBB fanatic, but my expectations will similar to the WM era. (Also, I thought Fred was a woeful choice back in the day, so what the heck do I know.)

I don't know if Fred is coming back or not, but to say he wouldn't have success this time around is crazy. I think he would instantly keep Foster and Hunter because of his style of play. He made YMCA Georges Niang an NBA player because of his skills. Could you imagine Foster as a stretch big in Fred's offense. Foster is seven feet tall and more athletic. Fred could develop him into a pick and pop guy, and he can run to the rim, and protect the rim. Foster would thrive in Fred's offense. A seven footer who can shoot the 3! Foster would stay because he would instantly see what Fred could do for him and his NBA future.

Now, Fred just finds a couple shooters in the transfer market, which there are more of now and may be able to play right away with the new rules that are coming, that fit his system and they could be a 7-10 seed in year two. Fred could turn it around just as quick because of his reputation from his first stint at ISU.
