Coach Nate isn’t impressive, we’re technically top 25 this year but I’d attribute that more to having some guys who can flat out score. Our half court offense is usually really bad and just isolations. We need a real offensive coach to take a true next step
I take offense to this.

I don’t think this gets talked enough about to be honest. He’s supposedly our offensive guru. But for the most part this season last few seasons our offense has looked like complete garbage as in sets and out of bounds plays. Schmidt is in full control in the huddle when drawing up the offense. I trust TJ with all my soul, but when’s enough enough for certain assistants? I’m not even trying to start ****, but it’s a valid question and discussion.
Our offense has been really, really good with a full lineup. One of the best in the country.

Well, the offense was buckled because a catch and shoot guy wasn't standing in the corner anymore. If you're talking championships, you're going to have to have an answer to that.
I’m more concerned with just the plain Jack of looseness with the ball. Sure, I’ll kind of give Keshon a pass since he’s generally trying to make things “happen” and will force things at times.

But Lipsey and Jefferson seem more basketball savvy and have continued to make casual mistake after mistake. Just seems so out of the ordinary from what we’ve seen earlier in the year.

It's a long season and there are almost always games like this where the energy is low and there's a lack of attention to detail. It happens to almost every team every year. We're banged up, coming off a physical game at Houston where we were shorthanded, and we played in front of 12 people last night. Bad nights happen. It's not the end of the world and it certainly doesn't mean we have bad coaching. Some of the stuff I read on here is mind-numbing. We've been in the top 10 all year. That doesn't happen ever at Iowa State. Coaches are doing something right.

You're being kind.

The team loses a game primarily because we have good players committing far too many unforced turnovers that have nothing to do with offensive sets so the dips$hits on the board start blaming Nate Schmidt for that.

100% this. When players execute the game plan, we almost always win. When players turn the ball over, over dribble, and the ball or players don’t move - we suck. I guarantee the coaching game plan isn’t to do the latter.

I bet half or more of our recent turnovers are self-inflicted.

Exactly. Joshua Jefferson dribbling like my 9 year old has been a major concern all year. I will say, as far as game planning goes, the fact that he is a play initiator at times blows my mind.

There is, but they don't matter. KSU was #1 in the country in their run, and we were like top 5 full strength after Milan came back. Couldn't tell you how to find it though, just reporting what I read.
The problem with this and ISU's offensive rankings when being at full strength, there's an incredible amount of overlap between being at full strength and playing a bunch of non-con dog turds. There's also a lot of overlap between being without Milan or KG and playing the meat of the Big 12 schedule.

Clearly the offense is much better at full strength, and has been really good. Unfortunately there aren't a ton of data points of the team being at full strength and playing good teams. Those few data points support the offense being really good at full strength.

Trying to balance that with a few points like WVU, KSU and OSU where missing one starter meant the team turned into complete garbage.

Part of the fun and mystery in March. I really don't think this team can put together the 4 games in a row without turnover problems that will probably be needed to make it to a final four. But this team is probably going to be a mystery right up to the tourney, since I'm guessing it'll take KG a while to get back to somewhat normal. It seems like he's been hurt for a long time. Every time I've watched it seems like he is laboring to get up and down the court for weeks now.

Teams are defending us farther away from the paint because we're missing someone like Keshon that can break down a defender and get in the lane. We couldn't get anything going down low last night because we didn't have a guard threaten the lane to create space.

Lipsey is decent, but he's more effective with the ball flying around and using a defender's momentum against him. Jones and Heise are pretty average when it comes to beating a defender with the dribble. They do other things really well, but that is not their strong suit.

Also, Jefferson is lethal when he has a little extra space to work. But he has been facing quick double-teams lately due to our spacing issues lately, and he has been forcing things too much.

Just bumps in the road. We'll be fine. That was just a bad night in an emotionless environment. TJ and the team didn't forget how to play. I think we'll win 2 of the last 3 and go into the Big XII tourney with some momentum.

Agree. In a nutshell, it’s hard to say just how good the offense actually is.

OSU was blitzing the pick-and-roll at the top of the key and we didn't have the ball handler (Keshon) that would prevent that from being effective.

We were down KG and they took advantage.

It's almost like our offense was built around having a particular set of skills, and last night we were without an important one.

Also I wouldn't be surprised to learn there was more sickness in the team than what was let on -- nearly everyone seemed to be playing out of character in slow motion.

I'm perplexed how anyone could see the infuriating lack of urgency out of the players, especially our leaders, last night and come to the conclusion that the poor performance was the fault of our offensive coordinator.

It's been asked but imo it's fair to ask who this is for when things aren't going well. I don't see much on TV so maybe the time out huddles etc. show more but is anyone vocally trying to push and pull one another along?

After a couple of fouls last night the players just kind of wandered around with seemingly no communication.

is Tamin still a PG or is he forced off the ball due to his thumb? I thought it was supposed to be a pain management thing and he would be healed by March. At this point, it doesn't look like it will be healed the rest of the season.
